Quiet, cool, luxurious wooden bungalows up on posts on the steep edge of the valley, each with a spacious, shaded porch immediately overlooking intensely green rice terraces, trees along the valley-floor stream, and the steep, forested slopes on the other side, under the watchful eye of Mount Agung as it appears and disappears behind the clouds. You reach the each bungalow from a small maze of stairs and elevated walkways that reveal new views with each turn. The Barong Villas are located at the end of an unlikely-looking narrow road that many drivers will justifiably not want to take their car down, and that turns into a path passable only by scooter or on foot. If you call or walk down to the villas to announce your arrival, the staff will come out on scooters to collect your bags as your driver waits on the main road. This makes the Barong Villas relatively isolated and peaceful, a little away from the commercial center of Sidemen -- exactly what we wanted. The small staff are friendly and helpful. Made, who says that they have no manager but seems to be the first among the group of equals running the Villas, set us up with Nyoman, the gardener who created the lush, colorful, and thoughtfully-conceived gardens throughout the Baron Villas, to guide us for several hours on a delightful hike right down from the villas through the rice fields, across the small stream below the villas, to the larger river a bit further away. The scenery is stunning and photographers will be in heaven. Nyoman is cheerful, patient, and knowledgeable; I highly recommend this excursion if you like to walk in the countryside and forest and don't mind getting a little muddy. You could try striking out your own, but you would likely not see as many interesting things, would not have Nyoman's explanations, sharp eye, and good company, and you could easily find yourself lost and unsure about where it was OK to walk on farmers' land or where you could cross a stream. If hiking is not your thing, you can order meals on your patio or in a small roofed outdoor dining area, swim or lounge in or by the small pool, or watch the many different butterflies in the garden, and you are just an easy scooter ride away from all of the more typical pleasures of tourism in Sidemen. You can breakfast on your own porch overlooking the rice fields, from where you may see some spectacular, if not particularly rare, birds. We had great views from our porch of a Javan Kingfisher with its cobalt blue, turquoise, and black back and wings and bright orange bill, and an elegant glossy black and chocolate brown Greater Coucal, not to mention many graceful Javan Pond Herons. We really enjoyed our two nights at the Barong Villas, and would gladly have chilled out here for another day or two before moving on.

We had a very pleasant stay in one of the villas. The team (family business) is very nice and helpful, friendly and warm! We arrived by motorbike, because it is not possible to get there by car or only to a very limited extent. The hotel room is very lovingly and elegantly furnished in a typical local style. Everything is there, the bed and bedding are very comfortable and clean. The food is brought to the room/to your own terrace and is also very good and lovingly prepared. Everything is freshly prepared, it can take a while but you have time and can enjoy the great view. The direct contact with the jungle and the adjacent rice field is exactly what we were looking for. We will definitely come back! Great hospitality! C.Schierig

We were to stay 3 nights in the establishment. The first night was quite difficult because the air conditioning did not work. It was not possible to take a bath, the bathtub drain was blocked. The second night, they changed bungalows for us at our request when we returned from our day. Cleaning had not been done in the first bungalow. We also asked to rent scooters but they no longer had any available. They gave us a number to rent one ourselves. We are quite mixed about meals, there are good things and not so good things. All meals are taken on the terrace of the bungalows. Which is quite nice with the view and the calm of Sidemen (you just have to be very, very patient to wait for the meal, 1 hour after ordering). And then when your dish stays out all night, it's still not pleasant when you wake up (insects ++) and it's a little unhygienic when they put breakfast on the table, even if it's not cleaned. The swimming pool looks worse than in the photos and it also lacks cleanliness. Fortunately, the staff is friendly and available to answer your questions. We are in low season, I will take that as an excuse for the drop in quality of the hotel. The reviews are still very good in general so give this hotel a chance.

You reach the 6 villas (large wooden bungalows on stilts) via a narrow, difficult alley. This place is not recommended if you are disabled due to stairs. The location is beautiful with beautiful views. The villas all have a view of the mountains and Mount Agung. Large veranda, good mosquito net and air conditioning. Bathroom is also huge. The bathroom window could not be closed, so be prepared for animals. There were also some cracks in the planks, so the whole thing is not well insulated. The advantage is that you hear every frog, cricket, bird and cow, which is soothing. All in all, everything was very clean. Swimming pool also clean and fine. The employees were helpful, friendly and sweet. Spoke good English. Through them you can rent scooters, do laundry, trek through the village and rice fields. There isn't really a restaurant. You order your breakfast the night before and it will be delivered to your veranda. Also available for lunch and dinner. The food was substandard and not recommended. Plenty of options nearby if you can and dare to drive a scooter here. Final grade an 8 because of the good location, view and the employees.

Access is impossible by car, there are 200m to go only by scooter or on foot On the other hand, once you arrive, the setting is splendid. The staff is incredibly kind. The rooms are atypical. For the price, it's a very nice hotel

We loved this private villa, this small refreshing swimming pool after walks. A little less the cuisine and the price of massages. Much better in the village. But great spot to experience Bali from the inside. BE CAREFUL if you are in a car, DO NOT ENTER the private road... deadly to get out!!!
