Being in a peak area, this standard is quite satisfactory. The only discomfort is that there is no elevator, the stairs are relatively narrow, and it is troublesome to get up and down large luggage. Breakfast is made a la carte, the taste is much better than some buffet breakfasts, and the service staff are also more enthusiastic.

Disappointingly i will just be repeating the negative parts of the reviews below. December 2024. We stayed in room 8. The bathroom was really quite shocking, with visible wall plugs, mould and urine on the lower part of the toilet. The whole room was dark, dated and grubby. See photos. The bed was comfortable which is the only plus point of the whole two night stay here. Luckily it was just a base for what was otherwise a fantastic weekend. We ate in the restaurant on night one which was underwhelming and average. The full English was alright, but the whole place does lack some character really. Very overpriced for what is delivered to the customer for both food and accommodation. The staff were pleasant but at £6.50 a pint they needed to be. I`ll let any traveller decide from the images if you believe this to be a £160 per night stay.

Really disappointed, booked a twin room for a Friday night stay in Baslow. The room was very tired and shabby, carpet frayed at the edges , chipped paintwork and grotty en suite. The bed linen was clean and the beds were reasonably comfortable which is about the best I can say. Staff were friendly and helpful but that was no compensation given the room rate of £180. I have stayed at better hotels in London for that rate! The breakfast was okay though think back bacon is preferable to streaky rashers and felt that an opportunity to showcase local produce was missed. I wouldn’t stay there again. We were not asked if we had enjoyed our stay or if everything was satisfactory when we checked out. I suspect the staff knew the answer!!

Just spent friday evening here with the family, the pub is lovely and cosy, staff are very friendly. The family room was fantastic would recommend this to anyone looking for a family friendly pub to stay in with children. The children had bunk beds their own ensuite and the room even had plenty of books and games to keep them occupied. Everyone enjoyed their evening meal and equally so at breakfast. The cocktails are also worth trying! Will definitely return.

We've stayed here a few times now on our regular visits to Derbyshire. It does have a country inn feel with a more business feel. The rooms we've booked are small but everything we need for a short stay & comfortable. The food is good - pub standards done well. Nice, helpful staff. Fine breakfast. Would always choose it because relatively good value for around here, minimal fuss & better food than a lot around here.

After a country walk with friends we visited the Devonshire for lunch. Ordered 4 portions of nibbles at £24 to start. They consisted of 4 rings of calamari, 3 small chicken wings, 3 small chicken goujons and a small potion of belly pork bites. Tasty but not enough to feed a mouse. Three of us had pies for our main meal. They were homemade and tasty but again very small portions, the peas came in a pot that you would normally put a portion of butter in. About 35mm diameter and 15mm deep. The glasses of wine were £12.50 each. All four of us agreed that we liked the pub but would not return for food. The waitress was very polite and helpful. All in all over £170 including tip for a small lunch for 4 people in a country pub in our opinion is overpriced.

Whilst driving into the area over the Peak District i needed to stop for a comfort break (very desperate for the loo!) Very conscious that this was a hotel/bar i thought i would use the facilities and offer to pay for something to take away (couple of soft drinks and a few packs of crisps or a cake perhaps?). As i was desperate i made a beeline for the loo, again concscious this was a bar i was going to make sure i offered to pay something or at least take something away so not to be rude and just use the loo and leave. Upon leaving the loo i saw a lady with black hair and glasses who worked here and told her i had just used the loo and would she like mr to purchase something in return, her response left my gobsmacked......very rudely throwing her arm in the air and in front of a table full of other guests "No, you just carry on", i chose not to cause a scene (as she had taken care of that already) and left feeling quite annoyed that my offer to pay for something in return for using the facilities was met with such a rude gesture and comment. I pass through the area very often for work and it is safe to say i will not give the place a second look next time, maybe The Wheatsheaf down the road would be more kinder to potential guests and not very rude at the first meeting!!! Yes, i went straight to the loo and maybe should have asked before but as i was desperate i thought offering to pay as a way of thanks/apologising for dashing straight to the loo was the best option here. Avoid the place if you don't want to be rudely spoken to by members of staff!!!
