Hotel Larrañaga

Azpeitia|2.57km from city centre
Last summer we stayed here for two nights with son #1 and family and this summer with son #2 and daughter-in-law, knowing that our son, an aficicionado of Spanish tortillas (potato omelettes) would be delighted with the huge one that is placed on your table at breakfast before you even order anything else. There is a small buffet with fresh fruit, cheeses, yogurt and many types of cakes and you may also order a hot cooked breakfast. This year we had room #1, large with a fine balcony/terrace but no AC which was not a problem even in July. Our kids were next door. All rooms opened onto a large central lounge with a pool table and comfy chairs. We arrived on my 79th birthday which the staff noticed from my passport so at dinner (which we had there all three evenings) I was given a special birthday tart and happy birthday was played in my honor. Most of us ordered from the very ample daily menu, accompanied by a very nice Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia 2006 reserva - which, in case you are interested had virtually no mark-up in price. I checked in Madrid when we got back and found it minimally more expensive in one store and actually less expensive than at the Larranaga at another! We had that two nights and the other a Pesquera Crianza 2013, also very reasonably priced as is the entire menu of the day. You can also order from the regular menu which our DIL did as she had fallen in love with the battered hake (merliza a la romana). There is a bar and terrace and along the side of the building a small patio with comfy sofa and chairs, backed up by a trelllised vine full of chirping birds, a perfect quiet place to sit and read. Also a small lounge with TV. Wifi reception was good. Maria (chef, mama, grandma), Olatz (daughter) and Yosuna welcomed us warmly back for our all too short second visit. San Sebastian is a short drive away and a good place to spend a day and right in town there is a railroad museum which offers train rides on weekends (when we weren't there, unfortunately) and the birth place of Saint Ignacio de Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus - Jesuit Orden which is well worth a visit.
