We'd booked 2 superior deluxe rooms for 3 nights at this hotel with glowing reviews. When we arrived around 7.30pm, warm greetings were made by a very smiley member of staff and we were given a tasty fruit drink. Then it started: they had issues with the plumbing so had to give us deluxe rooms and a promise that we'd have our desired rooms after breakfast the next morning...hmm...quicker than tradesmen in the UK then. Allegedly our driver suggested that they gave us free drinks to compensate so she offered wine. My adult son and daughter don't drink wine so we opted for local beers, a G&T and smoothie instead. Off we went to not unpack our cases and have a refreshing dip before their international buffet dinner. On first impressions, we thought that the deluxe rooms were fantastic and wondered if we should stick with the rooms and ask for a difference in cost. The pool was amazing and huge... and we had it all to ourselves - bliss. We went to put our supermarket drinks in the fridge but there was no mini fridge to be found although there was one in our children's room. The electronic safe wasn't working and had to be used manually with a key. Once showered, I discovered that the hairdryer didn't work and came out to the bedroom to find my husband messing with the AC. The AC's fan speed was stuck on full blast. He turned it warmer and thought the ceiling fan would help....ha! The control dial didn't respond correctly: high speed on 'off' etc. Off we went for dinner albeit with a delay and high jinks- I'd inadvertently let in a tree frog to my children's room. There's a note on the door about keeping the door closed to avoid unwanted visitors - it's a tropical country so this can happen. I phoned reception to see if someone could help remove it but all they got was me screaming down the phone as the slippery amphibian launched at across the bed and hide underneath it. Husband came to the rescue. The international buffet was 'ok' but no G&T for me: no tonic or lemonade available. I could have a Fanta orange with it but I'm afraid my alcopop days are over. I settled for the wine which, to be fair, was very nice. The bed was very firm and you could feel the springs slightly so not a great sleep. We were at the pool for 7.30am to have a pre breakfast swim only to find it being cleaned and wouldn't be open until after 8. The receptionist had said it opened at 7.30 and the pool sign said 7am. Breakfast was fine although no cereal but it did appear on the remaining 2 mornings. My daughter asked for some water which were were given a bottle of and then charged for. I've never paid for water on a hotel B&B basis before but perhaps it's a Sri Lankan thing. The dining staff were incredibly attentive. The receptionist confirmed that the rooms weren't ready so we had to pack everything up and leave it in the room and they'd transfer later for us. Off we went for our Sigiriya trip. Very friendly staff, lovely pool to swim in and interesting wildlife all around. Room clean and food fine. Air conditioning was not working consistently but with the ceiling fan it was comfortable
