I wasn't met with hospitality, but with scolding. When I misunderstood a instruction, when I asked for clarification, even when I simply tried to participate in the basic rituals of being a guest, I was met with a tone of sharp reprimand. You made me feel foolish for not already knowing the unspoken rules of your domain. Each correction felt less like help and more like a punishment, chipping away at my confidence until I dreaded any interaction at all. I began to measure my steps, to rehearse simple questions in my head, to become hyper-aware of my every action just to avoid provoking your displeasure. A vacation should not require such meticulous emotional labor. The language barrier was difficult, yes, but what was far more difficult was the barrier of your impatience. You showed no interest in bridging the gap between us; you only highlighted my failures on the other side of it. I left early because the atmosphere you cultivated was one I could no longer withstand. The price of those unused nights is nothing compared to the cost of sacrificing my peace of mind. The tragedy is that Anshun is beautiful, and its people warm. I will remember the city fondly, but I will also remember the loneliness of being made to feel like a nuisance in a place I paid to stay. We arrived and was told we cannot stay there. Wanted to make a complaint to Trip. Com. Then he allowed us to stay. He asked to cancel and find somewhere else. As we are foreigners, we are lost.
