When we arrived, there was no one at the front desk for quite awhile. Long enough that we shouted out for someone. My room was missing the closet door and had a light bulb out above the sink. The air conditioner quit working in the middle of the night. The next day we went down to breakfast at 7:00 a.m. because we had a conference to attend by 8:00 a.m. The man taking our order told us the cook was detained. I explained that we had a deadline and if we couldn't get breakfast before that time, we would go elsewhere. He assured us the cook would be there soon and gave us a cold stale pastry. We had a cup of coffee and waited. After we couldn't wait any longer for breakfast we left. I reported the light bulb out and the A/C not working to the front desk before leaving. When we arrived back to the room, the A/C appeared to be working, but the light bulb was still out. In the middle of the night the A/C quit working again. Some of the staff were doing their jobs. Others were not. I'm a City Clerk and we have a conference in Ames every July. We will not be back.

It's an old fraternity house on the edge of campustown, very well fixed up to provide a quality boutique hotel stay. Bed was comfy, room was of a reasonable size, very clean, TV &wifi worked well, powerful shower, hearty breakfast cooked fresh, nice lounge and TV/games room. Lots of parking. Fab stay when visiting ISU. Only catch: only a few rooms available, so book early esp around graduation! Highly recommended.
My husband and I were in Ames for a wedding and to celebrate my/our birthday with my twin. The Gateway was near the wedding venue as well as the Iowa State campus. We had a wonderful stay. Like many hotels now, they do not offer daily room servicing, but we are accustomed to that - gotta change with the times! There was clear notification in our room that daily room Our room was spotlessly clean, well stocked, and with a very comfortable bed and linens. When we needed it, we had very prompt service. Our remote for the TV didn't work, and the maintenance worker was at our room in five minutes or less to exchange it. We ran out of coffee to have for our second morning, and the front desk person said they'd bring it right up, and we knew they meant it. We told them we were just going out, so we'd stop at the desk to get it. They had it ready and waiting for us. All the staff was so friendly and helpful. Our room had been recently updated, including the bathroom, and we loved the convenience of a huge vanity with plenty of room for makeup, etc. The shower was large and elegant, unique in several way, including the ability to switch from a rain shower head to hand held. We loved the barn door effect on the bathroom. We had dinner and breakfast in the hotel restaurant and cocktails in the bar after we returned from the wedding. Savannah, the bartender, was friendly and served us some drinks of her own design. Wait staff at both meals did an outstanding job. Overall, we had a simply wonderful stay. Our only recommendation would be to have both elevators running, but even with just one, it was not a real inconvenience. We'll be back and highly recommend the hotel, restaurant, and bar.
Basic room and clean lodging, had a refrigerator and microwave. Room was inexpensive and the location had easy access to a lot of different fast food restaurants. Would stay here again, checkin and checkout was fast and easy even though I was booking last minute.
Loved the location to this hotel. Easy to get to from Duff. Could be walking distance to the stadium for football (since you are probably going to find parking at least this far away. LoL) I wouldn't call it near ISU campus, but plenty close to the Vet School. We had a nice stay. We got a room near the elevator, which I thought would be a big problem, but I never heard it from our room. Lovely big bed with great bedding and pillows. Lots of light. Lots of outlets. We will be back.

SswanygkThe good, the surfaces that need to be clean are: bedding and bathroom surfaces very clean, which is most important. Staff also very kind.. I rated it average due to a couple room issues. When we walked into the room the tile in the entry way was missing quite a bit of grout, it just unfortunately set a negative tone. The other issue was the door, I believe the hinges could use an adjustment. The door was very tight at the top but loose on the side towards the bottom.. You could stick a pencil through the gap between the door and the frame.. It let in a lot of light at night, we used a towel to cover it for sleeping. it was quiet when we stayed, but had it not been quiet the door gap would have allowed a lot of noise in as well. Would certainly be comfortable staying there again, but would try somewhere else first to see if other hotels in the area have better room maintenance.
GGuest UserThis is the 2nd time we've stayed at this hotel. It's just off I-35 but a quick drive to ISU. We will be back next time we're in town. The hotel is very clean and quiet. The in-room kitchen is very convenient. The breakfast was just OK, but free, so can't complain. We were able to check in early through the app, and our room was ready around 1pm, before we even got to town. I saw a sign that pets were welcome, but never heard or saw any.

My 82 years old mom and I had a two night reservation at this hotel. Due to been affected by a tornado in Texas the evening before traveling to Iowa, we were not able to leave Texas. Right after the tornado, without any power, limited communication system in my city and low cellphone battery, I reached out to request a courtesy exception to cancel my reservation without any penalty. At the same time, I reached out to my other hotels in Ames and my airlines to request the same. All hotels and my airlines were able to provide this courtesy cancellation with a full refund or credit (including for reservations booked tru 3rd party agency). Surprisingly, after several attempts to connect with their management the night of the tornado and the days after the staff informed they were not honoring the courtesy request, not even rescheduling our stay. It is very fortunate this was their decision in the middle of our local emergency. I will never book this hotel again. Book any other hotels in Iowa.
