We had a trip out for a lunch stop at the Rose & Thistle . All we can say is thank you for one of the best Sunday lunch's we have had out in the long time. Simple great food the beef was perfection. Great staff very attentive. As you have just taken over I think you are going a great job , well done we will be back

Great little pub. Great location! Usually satisfies the necessary parts. After all we have been visiting the R&T for 55 years. Yes! We are that old, and mine host would recognise at least two of us in our party yesterday 8th August. Sadly though, our anticipation fell flat. Middle of summer, lovely sunny day, and a reasonable number of walkers and visitors up the various valleys and up Clennel Street so the best hostelry in the area was closed during the day. Is business that good? If there are personal circumstances as opposed to a business decision then that is understandable. But this did happen to us once before, on a summer day on our infrequent ventures up the Coquet Valley. We had to go to Clenell Hall instead and enjoy their delights. We will try and come back.

Stopped at the pub for the first time after a days hiking for a quick Sunday lunch. The pub itself is really nice and homely, with a good beer garden boasting amazing views. The lunch itself was average compared to all the other places I would normally eat. Broccoli was a bit over cooked and the roast potatoes were over done on one side (plate side down). Before the manager comments ‘why didn’t you say something while you were there’ as I’ve seen him do on other reviews which are less that very good. Firstly, I didn’t think it was worth complaining. I ate all my lunch, hence why I didn’t rate the place poor or terrible and then I would have been complaining. Secondly, this is a review site, designed for people to leave reviews - the good, bad and the ugly. Reviews should be taken constructively and not result in sarcastic or rude comments written in return.

Me and my wife were out meeting some friends for a walk but thought we would get to Alwinton early for a bite to eat and a drink. On first walking into the pub we saw it was quiet so thought service would of been rather fast. We ordered our drink and then looked at the food menu, the menu was dirty and had bits of food stuck to it but nevertheless we continued and ordered food. We took our seat at the table and the first thing what struck us both was how many dead flys there were on the windows and how greasy the surfaces were. After about 15 minutes our cutlery was brought over and these also weren’t clean and whilst they were wrapped in a napkin the napkins had what appeared to be old food on them. Anyway we thought since we now had cutlery our food must be on the way, another 20 minutes past and still no sign of our food. At this point we knew that we were going to be late to meet up with our friends after waiting over 40 minutes for our food to turn up, we were the only ones to have ordered food after all. So we kindly said to the young lad behind bar we weren’t willing to wait any longer and to cancel our order. As we were walking up the street a staff member shouted to us come back we’ve got your food ready now but it was too late, why should it take us over 40 minutes of waiting and to walk out before someone acknowledged us. Needless to say I won’t be back!!
