The room was very basic but had pretty much all you need for an overnight stay. Nothing flash and everything is very dated but it was clean enough. The water pressure in the shower was very low so that was disappointing. Fluorescent lighting gave the place a sterile 1980 feel and the heater was pretty noisy. Basic but ok. Staff at check in were friendly enough.

This is a simple hotel, yet clean and well situated. A two minute walk from the hotel and you are at a small bay of shops with a bottle-o, a pizza and fish and chip shop, an Indian shop and a launderette. In the surrounding area there are also a lot of other facilities if you want other options. The beds were comfortable and the room had opening windows. The owners were wonderful and didn't mind a brief chat when we got there. they were also helpful in telling us what was available in the area.

I was extremely upset! We are in our 70’s. I have been a long time user of a particular booking site and have never been treated this way before. We arrived at the property to check in. The owner advised he had not taken payment yet. I asked if I could use my Visa to pay instead of the card on the booking. He said I’d given a different card on the booking and why would I want to do that. I replied, I realised this but would prefer to use my Visa. I was told, that I had a contract and why would I want to pay with another card, in a not very pleasant tone of voice. I replied because I would prefer to and please do not be so rude. The owner replied, in a very rude way, that he wasn’t being rude and he was going to cancel the booking. I asked him not to cancel and he reluctantly agreed to me paying with the card. I asked him to let me get my Visa to pay. It was in my case in the car. It meant I needed to open the case up in the boot and I asked if it would be okay for us to go to the room and open it. His response in a very sneering loud voice was “IT SAYS PAY ON ARRIVAL!” I told him okay I’ll get the card. In a sneering voice again he said, I’ll wait! On my return to the car I told my husband what had happened and he said we would not stay. We returned to reception where my husband asked why there was a problem. The owner rudely went over what I wanted to do. When I spoke again he pointedly kept looking at my husband and totally ignored me! We said we wanted to cancel without charge and were told, “go we are too good for people like you!” I admit, my husband did swear at that point as we walked out the door. The owner then yelled after us as we walked to our car, “stick it up your ****!” As I said, it was extremely upsetting. We couldn’t find any other accommodation in Ballarat, apart from a couple way, way over our budget. In the end we drove through to Queenscliff and found accommodation. All of this because I thought the money was being taken prior to arrival and when I was told it wasn’t, I asked to pay with a different card! Will never book Ambassador again.

For the price, this was a great stay. Scrupulously clean and with a comfy bed it was just what you need for a well priced overnight. Location not far from the Arch and close to take away for dinner if you don’t want to drive, though not “luxurious” was exactly perfect and as advertised. Honestly couldn’t fault it.

I would NEVER go back to this place. I do realise, in these times, properties are understaffed and have been through one of the toughest times ever but there is absolutely no call for that sort of behaviour. We are in our 70’s and have never, in all our travels been spoken to in that manner.
