This is the most beautiful, quiet and relaxing place to stay in what was once an English villa with exquisite gardens overlooking the sea from a hillside. The only reason we unfortunately could only rate 4 stars is because of the service issues in the main restaurant, which is a one star Michelin, specifically at breakfast but also somewhat at dinner. The food at dinner is excellent. The pool area is fantastic and the poolside beds so comfortable and relaxing. The gardens are a pure delight to explore. This is a romantic hideaway and we would definitely return.

The pleasures of Villa Pergola include: that it's set in a botanical garden that is exquisitely curated and maintained; that its position on top of the "hill" provides it with incredible views over the sea; that the rooms are supplied with everything you might need to make your stay comfortable. Our room had high ceilings, large windows, comfortable chairs, and a wrap-around balcony with chaises lounges and a table and chairs. As others have described, the buildings (as well as the pool area and spa) are spread over the footprint of the grounds. You will need to be able to walk up and down, plus face a number of steps. Four of us, all over 70, had no problem with any of it. Perhaps the true key to the superiority of Villa Pergola is the staff. The general manager, the asst manager, the young people serving at meals, the crackerjack housekeeping staff, the gardeners... all are helpful, friendly (without being overly friendly) and warm. It makes people feel welcome and happy. And it makes them want to return. Thank you Nadie, Lina, and all the people who work hard to make Villa Pergola such a magical place. We hope to be back soon!

I don't know why TripAdvisor lists this property as a "villa" instead of a hotel- quite odd. The mgr should contact them to correct this mistake. Frances Mayes mentioned Villa Della Pergola in one of her books- I think that's how I first became aware of it. We flew into Nice and were looking for a property not too far from the Nice airport before we continued on with our Italian travels. We stayed in the Ruth suite in one of the two original bldgs and it was wonderful with the best beds of our trip. Super comfy mattresses and excellent bedding. The two beds in this suite are "French" size/style which I hadn't heard of before and a bit smaller than an American queen. Our views of the sea and gardens below were sensational. There's also a private gate and path up to the pool from this room. The private terrace and bathroom were enormous as was the room. The two main bldgs from the 1800s are Pergola and Villino and there appear to be some brand new suites near the new pool at the top of the property. I can't vouch for the new rooms or their views- I would probably stick with a room in one of the two original bldgs. Names of rooms in Pergola: Sylvia, Walter, Ruth, Thomas, Wm. Names of rooms in Villino: Edward, Frances, Lewis, Margaret, Elgar and Cecil. I would ask for photos to make a selection. The GM told us that their gardens were voted most beautiful in Italy last year and they are sensational. What really wowed us though was the brand new swimming pool at the top of the property- just gorgeous and large with plenty of deep water. The casual pool-side lunch bar was excellent with outstanding food and service. Food is brought to your table or chaise lounge outside- there's no space for indoor dining within the pool cafe. Landscaping throughout the property is breathtaking. It's true that there are many steps and levels throughout the property so just be prepared. I have bad knees and only encountered problems in these areas which I hope they will correct: the lovely infinity pool at the top is aesthetically pleasing but needs at least one hand grab along with glass wall where you first enter the pool and the underwater steps. Likewise, the older small circular pool on the level below has absolutely no rails or posts to hang onto when entering the steps to go into the water. The chaise lounges at the top new pool are beautiful and well padded but so low -almost sitting on the ground and too low for people with bad knees to get up and down. I think a few higher lounges should be added. I noticed an older woman with her grandchildren sitting in an upright chair- I'm sure she was scared to get down on one of those lounges for fear she wouldn't be able to get up again! The beauty and aesthetics can be maintained with a few minor adjustments. The pools are unheated and wonderfully cold and refreshing on a hot, sunny day. The upper level was very windy and we enjoyed the strong breezes as it was quite hot and nice not to feel sticky from humidity

This is an amazing hotel if you like plants, gardens, views are spectacular and I loved the vibe of the place. The minus is the bad service and the food for breakfast! You can literally wait one hour before getting an egg, even if the restaurant is empty! Everyone is very groomed and polite, but not so helpful. Distance between the rooms and the public areas could be very far. Indications and signage is not available or very badly placed. It’s a nice hotel but could be very tricky.

This hotel is a gem.The staff led by Nadia the most excellent manager are wonderful and could not do more to make us enjoy our stay. The food is very good and its Michelin star is well justified. The young chef is outstanding aided by Marko the knowledgable sommelier and Valeria a most helpful waitress. The hotel is set in beautiful gardens overlooking Alassio and the Ligurian sea. Nadia the manager was wonderful in providing ideas for tours of the local area and booking local restaurants. We could not fault this hotel and will definitely be returning.

We travel a lot and stay in lovely hotels and when driving away after our stay we agreed that this is our number 1 hotel. The staff are focused on making your stay wonderful, the view is stunning and the rooms very comfortable. It is a small hotel of (currently) 15 rooms and during our visit there was an option between two of them so we were shown both and offered the choice. The beds were very comfortable ( very unusual for Italy where hard and uncomfortable beds are the norm) and when I asked for additional hangers and decaf coffee for the espresso machine they were quickly delivered. The gardens surrounding the hotel are award winning and there are daily guided tours with a gardener who speaks Italian and English. They are currently completing an infinity pool, along with gym and spa at the top of the hotel grounds with views across the coast. The hotel has a dining room and is also a 15 minute walk down to the town of Alassio where there are many bars, cafes and restaurants as well as the chance to stroll along the promenade.

We stayed for 4 nights, from the moment of arrival to the point of our departure we enjoyed a first class experience. The staff were friendly, professional, attentive and helpful. A special mention for the knowledge sommelier who introduced us to some very nice regional wines and to the housekeepers who maintain ultra high standards of cleanliness in the beautiful rooms and around the hotel in general. The Villa’s that comprise the hotel are a fabulous and exceptionally well maintained piece of history and the botanical gardens are a delight. The restaurant is well worthy of its Michelin star, we intended to eat there only once during our stay but opted to eat at Nove on three occasions. The maitre d’ and the table service staff were also superb. No complaints whatsoever, we fully intend to return at some point.

We stayed for 2 nights and had a very enjoyable stay. We booked a superior room and were quite surprised at the size of the room which was fairly large. The bathroom was well equipped and had lots of light. We also had a large balcony with deckchairs overlooking the garden. The garden is fantastic and its a must to wonder round. There is no pool for swimming only a very large jacuzzi. We dined twice at the hotel and enjoyed the beautiful setting overlooking Alassio. The food and wine although a little on the expensive side was superb. The street leading to the hotel is very narrow so be prepared. If your planning a beach holiday, this is not the place to go to since its quiet a walk down and a steep climb to get back. It's perfect for 1 or 2 nights or for a special occasion.
