Great cottage experience in Karuizawa, lovely ambiance and very peaceful to walk around the grounds during the day. We were lucky enough to also see some cherry blossoms still in bloom despite going in mid-April! Service is also great with transport services to the cottages. Only troublesome thing is that you'll need to plan your time well to take the internal shuttle bus back from the shopping plaza/hotel lobby as it comes every 10-20 min!

📍Nozawa Onsen Grand Hotel ✨ Hotel features The hotel is in a great location, close to the ski resort, and easy to walk to the hot spring street, winter stay is especially atmospheric to soak in the hot spring at night looking at the snow, especially in the open air, when the snow is super cold, the body is super hot, very magical ice and fire feeling. ♨️ Surrounding environment 🔹Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort - Long enough ski trails, rich terrain! 🔹Onsen Street Walk - Traditional Japanese street full of small shops, try onsen buns, Nozawa vegetables, hand-beaten soba noodles, warming and authentic. 🔹 Taoist God Fire Festival (January 15th every year) The atmosphere is super lively! 🛁Rooms & Facilities 🔹 Hot spring large bath & open-air bath view is excellent, unfortunately private bath was not open during stay. 🔹 Spacious room, clean and tidy, Japanese design, super comfortable to sleep. 🔹 Winter is especially feeling, as soon as you open the window, you will see the mountains of white snow, after skiing back to the hotel to bathe, chill the whole way. 🍽️ Dining experience 🔹 Breakfast (buffet) - Western + Japanese option, miso soup, Nozawa, grilled fish are quite good. 🔹 Dinner (Kaiseki) - Exquisite Japanese banquet cuisine, including sashimi, wagyu beef, tempura, taste good but no special surprises. 💗 Check-in experience The perfect combination of skiing + hot springs, the hotel environment is comfortable, the location is convenient, the surrounding traditional hot spring street, and the Daozu God Fire Festival such a limited experience, winter stay CP value is extremely high! #Nozawa Onsen Grand Hotel #NozawaOnsen #Ski Accommodation Recommendation #hot spring hotel experience #Open-air bath #Skiing and Hot Springs #Japanese Inn #A must-do for winter travel #Driving Japan #Fire Festival Shocking Experience

You can take a bus from Shinjuku directly to Hakuba Happo Terminal, and take the free V2 bus to Cotina You can also book a bus back to Haneda Airport and depart directly from the hotel. A perfect ski trip, heavy snow, and a romantic hotel Mostly Europeans, Australians, and many Japanese people The hot springs are also good, and you can directly see the ski slopes in the open air Beautiful

When I arrived at Yudanaka Station, I tried to call on my cell phone, but the phone didn't work, so I was able to request a shuttle service with the help of the station staff. It didn't take long for the staff to come and we were able to move quickly and comfortably. From the time I arrived, they came out to the door and greeted me kindly, and they kindly explained the nearby hot spring tour and the use of the ryokan facilities. We were a family of four (2 adults, 2 children), but the accommodation was not small. Dinner on the day of check-in and breakfast the next day were provided, and the meals were delicious, and the staff who served the food were also very kind. When I returned to the room after dinner, a cozy blanket was set up, so I could rest comfortably. When I checked out the next day, I was able to go to the monkey park through the shuttle service. Overall, all the staff were very kind, so I felt good. The facilities were clean, and there were many things to see around, so I definitely want to go again next time. I highly recommend it to others.

It satisfied all my fantasies about Japanese hot spring hotels. Facilities: We booked an ordinary Japanese-style room with a bathroom, but there was actually a window, but the view was different. The room was considered large in Japan, but the door was a bit small, so there was no place to spread out the suitcase. Environment: When I went there, the male and female hot spring baths had been changed, so I only experienced one. There was a large bath, a small bath, and an open-air bath, but the most comfortable one was the indoor bath, with the most suitable water temperature. There is no private bath that can be reserved, but it is better to go later. If you are lucky, you can get a private bath experience. Service: Very good. The hotel has a car to connect Yudanaka Station to the hotel, but it will be after 2 pm. There is also a route to the Snow Monkey Park, but there is no route back from the park. The hotel is very good. When we just arrived at the hotel, we found that our bag was left at the station. The staff pulled me back to the station to get the bag. I was the only one in the car, and it was a complete chartered car experience. Breakfast and dinner were very rich, and it can be seen that they were made with care, but I don’t like to eat raw food, so I just experienced it and didn’t taste anything different. There was also beef on the day I ate there, and there were many dishes, so it doesn't matter if you don't eat any of them. If you have enough budget, I still recommend trying it! ! ! You can feel the traditional Japanese dining

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The room was quite spacious and clean. Every day cleaning, replacement of towels and bathrobes, frequent change of bed linen. Razors, toothbrushes, shampoos, soap, shower caps, clean bathrobes are always freely available near the reception. The view from our window was of the mountains. The hotel has a spacious, comfortable ski room. Each room has a locker for storing ski equipment. Ventilation is good. There is no drying. Our stay included breakfast and dinner, which we really enjoyed. Buffet. The choice of dishes is large, especially for dinner. For breakfast you can choose two types of omelet, sausages, sausage, fish, various vegetables, fruits, juice, milk, cereal, salads, soups, croissants, etc. For dinner, there is generally a great selection of dishes: raw fish, fried fish, stewed fish, squid, shrimp, scallop, pork with vegetables, beef stew, chicken, soups, salads (huge selection), vegetables (huge selection), national dumplings, and of course rice and spaghetti, fruit, ice cream, cakes and I don’t remember what else)). The hotel spa has two onsens: the first is indoors, the second is indoors with an open window (there is access to fresh air, which is very nice) and a view of the mountain. There is also a sauna. There are separate zones for men and women. Entrance to the pool is extra (600 yen per adult), but it seems the pool was not open. There are massage chairs in the spa area, only 100 yen for a 10-minute session. Shampoos, hair conditioners, shower gels and body lotions are provided at the onsen. The hotel has a store where you can buy souvenirs, sweets, alcohol, as well as accessories such as glasses, masks, gloves and other things. On the ground floor there is ski equipment rental. The staff is very polite and helpful. The hotel is located right next to the ski slopes and lifts of the Norikura resort. There were few people on the Norikura slopes, so the slopes were in excellent condition until the evening. Several ski lifts depart directly from the hotel, from which you can go down a couple of red slopes and three green ones. Comfortable for beginners: wide, gentle, uncrowded slopes. Norikura connects to the Cortina area, which is also fun to ride. The total length of the trails is about 20 km. There is a shuttle stop next to the hotel, which takes you to any resort in Hakuba. There are no shops nearby. The hotel is not new, the furniture is somewhat tired, but this did not worsen our stay at all; the advantages of the hotel outweigh this 100 percent. I highly recommend this hotel.

During the skiing trip in Hakuba, although I didn't drive myself and the transportation was a little inconvenient (the shuttle bus with fewer flights sometimes couldn't fully meet the needs), the hotel's front desk service made me feel extremely warm and thoughtful. Here, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to several front desk staff for their enthusiastic assistance and professional service. This was my first time to go skiing in Hakuba. I was unfamiliar with the local environment and did not have a car. In addition, I had to send my luggage back to the airport, so I encountered many challenges during the process. First of all, I would like to express my special thanks to an older male waiter who was kind and polite. He helped me with the delivery service. The process was very careful and made me feel at ease. Secondly, thanks to a short, slightly fat but smiling male waiter. After learning that I had been waiting in the lobby for two hours because the shuttle bus did not arrive on time, he tried his best to help me call a taxi to the ski resort. Although he was unsuccessful in the end, he understood my persistence and was always willing to help. When I got back to the hotel, as time was tight, he took the initiative to ask his supervisor and quickly helped arrange a hotel car to take me to the station so that I could catch the bus and JR train to Tokyo. At the same time, he also helped me pick up my stored luggage and assisted in moving it. He was more anxious than I was throughout the whole process, which deeply touched me. I am deeply sorry that I was unable to express my gratitude or give a tip in person as I was in a hurry at the time. Also, I would like to commend a young waitress. Although she was inexperienced, she was still careful and responsible, and tried her best to solve my problem, which made me feel her dedication and professionalism. During this trip, the sincerity and enthusiasm of these service staff provided me with great help. Even when faced with emergencies, they always put themselves in the guests' shoes and demonstrated an excellent service attitude. Next time I visit Hakuba, I will definitely choose to stay at this hotel again because their service makes me feel at home. Thanks again! In addition, the staff who clean the rooms are also very professional, polite and responsible. As for the hotel facilities, cleanliness, decoration and the quality and style of the restaurant food, they are all great.

This hotel has unbeatable snow scenery and great service. Although Hakuba is inconvenient for transportation, the hotel has free shuttle buses to various distribution points in Hakuba. You still need to take the bus to the two nearby ski resorts, but we were lucky that day and met a free car with the word Sera printed on it to take us to Tsugaike. I don't understand what the mechanism is. The hotel has free popcorn, wine, sake, apple juice, red bean soup, milk, coffee, oden, curry rice, ice cream, etc., which can basically meet all the needs of a short stay. The best thing is the floor-to-ceiling windows in the lobby, which are very photogenic and very friendly for families with children who love to play in the snow. They can watch over their children indoors with the heater on. The comments all said that the dinner was average, so I booked the hotel's car to go to Roujiang, a super delicious barbecue restaurant, highly recommended, but reservations must be made in advance.

Decided to stay here as part of my Nakasendo hike. Nice, clean hotel. The dinner was amazing, and breakfast buffet is free for all guests. No private showers, but that's okay in Japan. It's quite a walk from the station however, about 10-15mins.

The hotel was only 10min walking distance from the bus station. The breakfast and dinner were very well prepared in the fine dining settings. The dormitory was very well kept, with basic accommodation facilities. Common toilets and bathrooms were only a few min away, but there were two basins within each of the dormitories. Good accessibility especially to food and hiking attractions nearby.

SseeseaflyWe stayed in the hotel for one week. We like the hotel a lot. - Staff are nice and helpful, especially a passionate guy at the front desk. They helped us book restaurants and deal with toll payment. - Breakfast is great. We haven’t felt bored after one week given many varieties. Especially they have “today’s special”, different omelette every day. We like the wasabi cheese omelette. On the other hand, dinner buffet was ordinary. Food became cold. With the same price, we had a nice 7-course French dinner in a nearby restaurant. - Room is nice and clean, although a bit small. Bed is comfortable with different pillows. We have some difficulty to allocate our big suitcase in the room without block the way. However, we noticed poor management for laundry room and emergency cases. - There are only two washing machines. Some people put clothes on washing machines or nearby for queuing. We waited in-person for 15min several times, but someone claimed they came earlier, or said they need to add additional time for dry. We had to wait until midnight to do laundry. - Nice onsen, but poor emergency handling. One day I heard voices from speaker for >15min during shower, and then realized it was from a cell phone when I was in indoor bath pool. A lady with black glasses was using the phone in the pool (not sure if taking photos or videos)! I felt very uncomfortable and went to the outdoor onsen. But she came to outdoor onsen shortly. I went back to indoor onsen, and saw the phone on a chair beside the indoor onsen. Another guest also expressed her concern to me. I called emergency phone in changing room, said three times “someone is using cell phone in bathing area, please send a female staff asap”. Unfortunately the guy who answered the call does not understand English. 5mins later he came to the door of changing room, asking who called SOS. I told him again, and he finally understood, but did nothing except asked my room number. After we checked out the next day, the guy saw me and told me in Japanese that “sorry, but we will improve in future” (showed English translation to me). I was very disappointed. 1) Why did the hotel ask a guy who doesn’t understand English to take care of female onsen? What if someone fainted? 2) No actions were taken after I reported issue. No one came to stop the issue, no one checked whether inappropriate photos/videos were taken. Whole staff are nice, the hotel is poorly managed in some places.

BBryce van de LaarFrom the moment you enter Kokuya Ryokan, be prepared to leave the real world behind and fully immerse yourself in the experience. You swap your shoes for slippers at the door and don’t see them again until you leave. You will receive a warm welcome from polite and gentle-mannered staff, get taken up to your beautiful room, and once you’ve changed into your traditional yukata, it’s time to let the relaxation begin. The multi-course dinner will probably be one of the best meals you’ve had in your life, with many unusual textures and flavors to try. The futons are comfortable, and your room is kept toasty warm. There are even skincare products to keep you pampered and moisturized between soaks in the onsen. Honestly, you won’t even need to open your suitcase while you’re there. The staff will take you through all the logistics when you arrive, but there are some things that might be useful to know in advance. - The ryokan sends a shuttle to Yudanaka station at about 15:00 to collect new arrivals, so time your journey to take advantage of this benefit. - The ryokan also offers guests the opportunity to catch a shuttle to the Snow Monkey Park immediately after breakfast the next morning. - After you leave the ryokan, they will take your luggage down to the coffee shop opposite the station, so you don’t need to worry about those logistics. - Trains from Yudanaka back to Nagano leave at 12:30 and 15:30. - The ryokan itself has several private onsens that you can reserve for a 45-minute slot. Because the onsens are on the property, you can go in with your partner or travel companions regardless of gender. It’s a boutique hotel, so you don’t have to worry about not getting access to all the onsens you want. - The ryokan is on the main road of the Shibu Onsen town. The hotel will give you a key so you can wonder down the main road, visiting any of the public onsens you wish - however, with so many gorgeous and more private onsens in the hotel itself, you probably won’t have time or the desire for this. - Also, there is a coffee machine in the room! (I was worried about having to survive without coffee, and this turned out to be an unfounded concern). We had an incredible and totally indulgent time at Kokuya. Experiencing a traditional ryokan is a privilege that you should try at least once if you can. And adding the Snow Monkeys in give the trip a double purpose, making it that much more memorable. The only thing that would have made the trip better is if we had been allowed to linger longer over every course of our dinner.

MMeowVanWhat an awesome experience! The hotel offered exemplary service before we even arrived. Due to special travel arrangements, we arrived late and the staff quick to arrange an in-room bento dinner for us before our arrival. When we got there, we were immediately blown away by the gorgeousness of the hotel. Despite its age, everything was very clean and polished. I can see that great care had been taken to upkeep the hotel and it’s premises, which are extraordinarily beautiful. We couldn’t resist taking pictures even after check-out, and it took us an hour to finally reluctantly leave. Words cannot actually do the place justice, you must visit there yourself. We were very impressed with how delicious the food was, and the attention to detail, including the placement of the food, the coordination of food color. My mouth is still watering as I recall how delicious it was. I had 10 helpings of their prime rib one day. Besides, I had a dietary restriction and the staff were really careful with that, to the extent of reminding me what dishes not to eat everyday at their breakfast and dinner buffet. In addition to excellent food and service, the hotel went out of its way to be very eco-friendly. For every day that we did not need our room to be tidied, we earned points, which can be traded in for ice cream or other goodies. Finally, the staff spoke perfect English. This is rare indeed, and it made everything so much easier and so much more enjoyable. Thanks for the experience!

HHanaLocation is great, it is just on the main road and by the lake. I remember there was a Lawon convenient store not far away when we drove past. We stayed there for 1 night. I highly doubt if we were given the wrong room type, as I booked a room that can see the full Suwa Lake, but the room we have got is at the corner. It is because of the cherry blossom season, there are so many mosquitos outside so we couldn't open any window. According to the information provided by the hotel, the mosquitos don't bite human, but create stains on clothings. Anyway, the room has a private onsen. It was quite small, and look a bit old. The water is very hot, though I couldn't smell any sulfur so it is not a real hot spring. As the windows can't be opened, so it is a quite stuffy inside the bathroom. The room has equipped with all amenities, but no bottled water. The hotel mentioned the water is drinkable from the tab. The room is quite clean and spacious. The mattress is quite nice, it was good for taking a rest after a whole day trip. We chose the meal package (breakfast and dinner). They were both Japanese style with a lot of dishes and options. Food is great. Nagano is not a place that produces meat, so mainly there are a lot of vegetables. With the price we paid for, the hotel services, food and everything is quite reasonable. However, the hotel is a bit old. Nothing is special other than providing a clean room to sleep.

GGuest UserLove this hotel. The key ingredient: the staff, so very friendly and polite. Especially Uda at the front desk, she was always cheerful, attentive, and went out of her way many times to see to our needs. She is the perfect representative of everything friendly and positive about this resort experience. This was our first ski trip to Japan and the amenities are such a pleasant surprise. The hotel has its own ski rental, lift tickets sold right outside the door, 2 different restaurants, and its own onsen. Which was a new and lovely experience for me. The hotel is a bit older, and the bathroom is small for western standards, but the bidet more than made up for that ( love it ) and the onsen took care of the daily bathing ritual ( for me ). Heater worked well as well as the wi-fi throughout the hotel. The restaurants were a nice convenience, we paid extra for breakfast and dinner vouchers, and it was fun wearing our provided yukatas ( robes ) all day in the hotel ( not required ). The ski runs are well marked, and the ski lodges had delicious Japanese fare that blew our minds. And the Madapow! ( Madarao powder ) generously snowed down on us. Overall, would highly recommend Madarao Kogen Hotel. Again, arigato gozaimasu to Uda and the entire hotel staff that made our 3 day stay so very lovely and relaxing. Would definitely stay here again in the future. Fred Ermac, Jan 2025

GGuest UserThere were bookshelves everywhere, both in the rooms and in the corridors, and books of all genres were freely available to read. I was able to enjoy a relaxing and soothing time while soaking in the hot springs and reading. This is an inn that I would like to stay at for longer and again. All of the dishes were made with fresh ingredients that had a seasonal feel to them, and I was truly satisfied. The large tatami room bath and the open-air bath both have soft hot springs that you can use as many times as you like. The ceiling of the bedrock bath was a starry sky, which made for a very soothing space.

The staff member at the time was very kind and helpful, which was very much appreciated.
