Scandic Star Lund

We enjoyed our stay – staff were friendly, place was clean, there were rooms for a family of five (seemingly an amazing find in and around Lund!) and the breakfast was amazing!! At least for anyone visiting in the near future though I would highly recommend earplugs (which we luckily remembered) as the windows desperately need changing – which they are in the process of doing. We stayed during a storm and the windows were so poor it was almost as windy inside as it was out! Our children had fun in the pool, but we were caught short on our first visit without having shower gel/ shampoo with us and 2 of them ended up very itchy for the rest of the day, simply from the extreme amounts of chlorine in the pool – of course it's better this way then them getting sick, but remember proper soap and moisturiser for afterwards – the soap canisters were nearly empty (or not working properly). The hotel is quite far out but bus connection was good and we never waited long for a bus. Would definitely consider going back!

The hotel was chosen because I needed to be near the university. A total of 3 stays during Sept / Oct 2019. Twice in ”regular room” (two nights) and one longer stay in club room (5 nights). I understood from previous reviews that the hotel was not worth its 4 (!!) stars, but that it was so bad for its relatively expensive price I had no idea. The building is a typical rental property from the 60s. Very noisy through thin walls. The rooms are worn with old furniture and decor. The breakfast is a disaster. Powder coffee that is not drinkable. Gloomy range of everything. The gym in the basement is about 7 sqm, consists of an old bicycle. The cleaning is difficult to judge as everything is so worn. There were however silverfishes on the floor in the bathroom. The bulbs in the pentry were not working. The bikes that are lent out are equally worn and have no lights front and rear, no reflectors. What bothered me the most: During my first two stays in a regular room, an evening buffet was included, which I was never informed about. The last stay I stayed in the club room (no better standard just slightly larger area) and ate the evening buffet which was open to all guests. During dinner, a member of staff comes up to me and tells me to pay for the food. She didn't even ask which room I had or what my name was, they were a nasty feeling. It turned out then that the hotel's most expensive room did NOT include evening buffet (!?). Very strange.. Another very strange thing was when I bought a beer in the bar for bringing it to my room. The bar attendant said she had to follow me to the room (!!) to make sure that I would not go outside the hotel.. WIFI is not working all the time, especially not in the club rooms far away from the reception. When I told the reception about the problem with the wifi, they said they should restart it.. not better after that. Some of the staff were nice, but most spoke inadequate Swedish and were strange in contact. I wont get back.

The accommodation is clean, quiet, open the back door to a small garden, good weather, breakfast / dinner as well. There are bicycles to borrow to ride in the city to see the view. The accommodation is 2 kilometers walk from the train station. Or you can take a bus from the front of the station, bus line 3

We were really looking forward to celebrating a birthday lunch at this hotel. For us, coming all the way from South Africa, this is a rare treat. To say our experience was underwhelming would be an understatement. Service was poor to non-existent. After our waiter (Eddie) brought us our drinks (one variety of Sauvignon Blanc for SEK 115 which was about the cheapest, nastiest wine I’ve ever drunk) we never saw him again. We flagged down someone who looked like a waiter or host (thin woman with a blonde ponytail) who seemed quite annoyed when we requested a bread basket, some side plates to eat it on and drinking glasses for water. There were none on the table. She seemed most put out that she was being asked to do something. The famous prawn sandwich which costs a small fortune is passable, at best. Half a slice of white bread, some mayonnaise, three pieces of boiled egg, a generous helping of prawns and lettuce. That’s it. I would make a better one at home. It tasted fine and everything was fresh but those prices don’t begin to justify such shameless mediocrity. My daughter ordered the potato main with hazelnuts and capers. This very expensive dish comprised a single, overcooked, unappetisingly grey baby potato cut into tiny segments and covered in mayonnaise and butter. Luckily the bread was nice (though not warm) and that was her lunch. The soft serve dessert is just that, with a tiny swirl of caramel sauce. Nobody came back to enquire if we needed more drinks or if we were enjoying our food. Eddie needs training. The thin girl needs a personality and to be taught that it’s okay to smile and be polite to guests when they make a simple request. For a hotel of this calibre such poor service and meh food is unacceptable. They are riding on their reputation which will become harder to maintain unless they dramatically up their game. Disappointing experience.

I'm disappointed for several reasons. First the bathroom smelled initially because i suspect water hard dried out in the drains. The room was uncomfortably warm and the street noise loud. At 1 am I finally could open the window to let some cool air in but then at 5.30am the street cleaner came with a loud machine followed by the garbage collector at 6am. Dear hotel manager you'd think that the city could find more appropriate times to do that. Last the breakfast was minimal. A bun with cheese, 1/2 cup of yogurt, and bad coffee. The orange juice was good and so were the croissants. I stayed here in July 2018, as I recalled the rooms were nice, location good and price reasonable. Had the breakfast not been so poor and had I stayed in a quieter room I might have given this hotel a better rating.
