Distant Relatives Ecolodge & Backpackers

Distant relatives is the perfect place to stay in Kilifi. The whole staff is very friendly and make you feel like family. My wife and I arrived during off season, so when we showed up at 04:30 there was already a room available even though our check in was technically not until 12:00 that day. Mohammed at the bar made sure we were taken care of whenever we wanted something to eat or drink. The food and drink prices were reasonable, after 5 days we only spent around $100 USD. The pool was our favorite spot to sit and relax while reading our books. But reception was also able to help us call a Tuk Tuk into town and to the white sandy beaches and that was about $10 USD round trip. Beware of the Vervet monkeys though, they live in the trees surrounding the property and they will steal your food if you turn your eyes for even just a second! The toilets outside the Bandas are composting toilets, and that isn’t for everyone, but they do have traditional flush toilets as well near the pool area.

TERRIBLE VACATION This is the first time I have given such a low rating, I usually give it a 10. But this hotel is just a terrible case! We chose here at the Booking based on reviews that, apparently, were greatly exaggerated. But, everything is in order. Firstly, as soon as we got to the hotel, the woman at the reception “delighted” us with the news that they were all booked and had some kind of overbooking, so on our last day from here we would leave and spend it at some their friend’s hotel. Seriously? Will we spend our last day on the ocean moving to your friends? We said strong “no”, it's your problem. Those woman called Justin, the hotel owner, and he said, well, ok, we’ll solve this problem somehow. Justin, for the future, if there is such a problem, then guests are not presented with such a choice. For moving “to friends” you need to offer something, a couple of free dinners, an excursion, money as compensation. You are running a business, and you should know this. Further, worse, our toilet was broken, after complaining, Justin called a plumber. We woke up at night and the entire floor was covered in water that was flowing from the toilet bowl. On the first day, the plumber changed the toilet, but the water did not flush anything, on the second day the situation did not improve and Justin called the plumber again. So again, we watched in the room as he fixed the toilet. On a good note, they replaced our old shower cap with a new one. Whoever will be staying in our FUNZI room, don't thank us! On the fourth day, the roof in the room above my bed collapsed. We got used to all sorts of beetles and scolopendras, but still asked for it to be repaired. We waited 2 days. As for silence and relaxation, it’s simply not here. At night, the noise from discos makes it difficult to sleep, at least for us, on the second floor. There is also no time to rest during the day, the owner is building a kitchen right in front of the rooms, there is constant noise and it gives you a headache. I hope that the rooms on the second floor will not be rented out, because all the smells will go into the rooms. There is almost always music playing in the hotel, but since the equipment is very cheap, all the bass went to us on the second floor. If you can hear music on the first floor, then on the second you can only hear boom-boom. Combined with the kitchen being built, we had a constant headache. A couple of times the owner came with friends, as if to his summer house, music was playing loudly, they were playing billiards. Mike, Justin's uncle, was trying to kiss my sister. What is this anyway? How dare you treat guests like this and exhibit such behavior? Justin, the owner, stopped greeting us altogether on the third day and even noticing us. This is hospitality. But when three families arrived and occupied six rooms, there were hugs, friendly conversations, and they even put new ketchup bottles in the restaurant. Let me add, it was my birthday!
