The room has good lighting and makes you feel relaxed. **Convenient Self Check-in** The hotel provides excellent self-check-in service, making the check-in and check-out process very simple and fast. The whole process was seamless and made me feel very convenient and comfortable. Overall, this hotel left a very good impression on me in terms of location, room quality and service level. The owner and wife were kind and smiley. It was the first guest house and the first dormitory, but the person in the room also communicated with the translation app and enjoyed it! The room was clean and very cozy! I also missed the game of the Nintendo (laughs) and I played it. I wanted to use it when I went to Arashiyama again. *ˊᵕˋ*

We had an excellent stay at this Machiya (traditional Kyoto townhouse) for 3 days. We only did in-room dining one night, but that was also excellent. The check-in process is a little strange, as you will receive communication from the company that's a little dense and will not interact directly with the staff unless you choose to. We had to scan and send our passport photos and fill out a registration card, but that was it. The property is small by European/American standards in the sense that you will need to be careful to avoid damaging (including possibly your own head) things during your stay due to height and luggage weight. There's slippers provided to switch from your walking shoes to walking inside the property and there is an excellent bathtub and washroom with washer. My two cautions - this firm has English speaking employees available during business hours (and an emergency line) but it is geared primarily towards the Japan renter. Be prepared to know Japanese or be willing to take the time to translate certain things via your cell phone/app of your choice to understand how to work the various appliances. As an older building, learning the heating/cooling. The second caution, as an older building sound is an issue. You will hear the street and need to control your volume in order to be a polite guest. If this isn't something you're looking to do, then just throw the money at a more modern hotel experience. We liked it - not everyone will.

The hotel lobby is gorgeous. It’s designed like a log cabin and they keep a real fire going in the fireplace, which makes the whole place smell wonderful. It’s a low-service hotel (the staff are also running the campground etc.). You have to make your futon yourself, and the bathrooms are shared but very clean. The room had plenty of electrical outlets and free tea. We couldn’t use the outdoor bath due to damage from last year’s typhoon, but the big indoor baths were clean and a good temperature. Food was really good, maybe a bit less in quantity than other ryokan but plenty. Cherry blossoms were in full bloom and we could see them from the window, alongside the river. I’d like to visit again in the summer. It looks like they’re constructing a new campground nearby and I bet it would be really nice to stay there.

The boss and his family are very welcoming and can communicate in Chinese, which is very convenient. There are many restaurants and supermarkets around, which are very convenient for rest. The nearby matcha shop is also very authentic, and you don't have to go to the Uji River to find it! The transportation is also very convenient. It takes about ten minutes to walk to the tram station, and it only takes half an hour to get to Fushimi Inari. The environment is also quite good. The decoration below the hotel is very life-like Japanese style. Hot tea and coffee are also provided, and there is a kitchen for cooking. The accommodation is very traditional tatami and very clean. We chose this ryokan because of the affordable price and location. When we arrived, our bags had been placed in our room (we'd sent them from our previous hotel via the takkyubin service), which was a nice touch. The room felt very small for the two of us. There was basically just enough floor space for our two futons laid out right next to each other. However, there is a large closet where they normally store the futons that we were able to use to store our luggage and other items when we rolled out the futons. The futons were very thin; I felt like I was pretty much just sleeping on the floor and it was rather uncomfortable. We got one of the private rooms so we would have our own bathroom but again, the bathroom was very small. Of course, we didn't spend a ton of time in the room anyway as we were out and about most of the time so the small space was not a dramatic downside. The neighborhood was quiet, which we liked, and the staff were very friendly. We had the western-style breakfast a couple mornings and it was quite good! All in all, it is an affordable stay in Kyoto, but I can't say that it is the most comfortable option. I would also warn that if you are looking specifically for a great ryokan experience and not just for a place to crash, this might not be the type of place you're looking for.

Thanks to the staff at the B&B. They saw that I hadn’t gone back at 7pm, so they figured I should take the last shuttle bus from the train station back to the B&B. Since it was starting to get dark at 5 o'clock, they deliberately pulled out a car to pick me up. Although the journey was not long, they saw that I was a woman and would save me from walking around in an unfamiliar field environment, so they offered to pick me up. On the day I left, the B&B took me to the station. They were very honest. Knowing that I rushed back to Kyoto early and would not have breakfast, they gave me a refund (this was breakfast that I added at my own expense and was not included when booking the room).
