Hampton Inn & Suites Richmond/Glenside

This was by far the BEST Hampton Inn I've ever stayed at. The staff at check in, breakfast and check out were extremely friendly and helpful. The entire building, including our room was very clean which made for a comfortable stay. To the manager at this Hampton Inn, please make sure you share with your staff what a great job they're doing and how valuable they are.

When making our reservation, we had been told that check-in time was 3:00. After slogging through 3 hours of traffic, we arrived at 4:30 and were told that our room was not ready, and it would be ready ”within the hour.” We mentioned that check-in was 3:00 and we were already 90 minutes past that. The clerk admitted that the previous guest stayed over for a late checkout. I asked why they would allow that when the room was sold for 3:00. He said that they were a Titanium Club member (well ex-cu-u-u-u-se me!) and they accommodate them. I asked, ”Even at the expense of other guests, who are also paying the same rate?” Well, we hung out in the lobby, then checked again at 5:30 when we had heard nothing. They had not started cleaning the room yet and they told us they would put two housekeepers on it and have it ready in 20 minutes. We were meeting our son for a dinner reservation in Richmond so couldn't wait another 20 minutes. So instead of cleaning up and relaxing in our room for an hour or so, we were just sidelined in the lobby. The room was nice, clean, and well equipped. It was not well sound-proofed; we heard a lot of street noise and could hear people talking on the terrace below late into the evening. Self-serve breakfast is included (which we did not know when we booked), with hot and cold selections. I usually have granola, which is the one thing they did not have. The bed had a nice firm, but not too firm, mattress. Overall a nice, if generic, stay, but the check-in experience soured us on the first day.

I drove 4 hours to this hotel, and they cancelled my booking not long before i got there, and my room was given away. I received an email 30 minutes before I got there, which I clearly didn’t see since I was driving… The front desk clerk was completely rude and had a terrible attitude. He didn’t have a name tag on (probably for a reason) so I didn’t get his name. The email said they possibly had another room to offer me. The desk guy didn’t even look, said they’re sold out and I’m out of luck. No apology, or “sorry for the inconvenience”, help finding a new room, AND I even asked to use the restroom (a locked single use restroom) because I had been driving for hours and really had to use the bathroom and he wouldn’t even let me use it! So they cancelled my booking, no reason given, no “sorry”, AND THIS MAN WHO WORKS IN HOSPITALITY WOULDNT EVEN LET ME USE THE RESTROOM after all that. Treated me as if I’m not even human, just some scum on his shoe. I would never try to stay here again.

On checking in we we were met by an Asian “gentleman” who seemed disinterested at best. No welcome was forthcoming. He demanded ID and we handed over my British drivers licence. He puzzled over it for a while then threw it back on the counter and said it was no good. We enquired why and he demanded “photograph”. We explained that the older type licences didn’t have photos on them and he replied “I don’t care !!!!!”. I asked why a photograph was necessary and he threw his arms out shouting “how do I know who you are ?” I questioned his attitude and demeanour and it was obvious he didn’t care one little bit. I was all for walking back out of the place, but my wife persuaded me to stay, as we would have been charged anyway. The “gentleman” offered no information regarding the hotel about the facilities ( or lack of them) breakfasts , pool use , ice machines etc. We were left to find out these things ourselves. On entering our room we discovered that the sink was being held up by a car jack and bit of wood with a tube of sealant adjacent. My wife immediately went and complained at how dangerous this was and he reluctantly changed our room. The hotel was ,as expected, a no frills establishment. On our last day ( 3 night stay) my wife decided to make use of the pool facility and asked at reception about towels for the pool . She said the place stunk of curry and was overwhelming. The same “gentleman” proceeded to give her the third degree I.e “where are you staying, who are you , what room are you in” etc before handing over a small towel that at best had seen better days. Overall I would not recommend this hotel to anyone based on our experience. Whoever the Asian “gentleman “ was, he needs to change his arrogant , abrasive, attitude immediately and stop treating the customers like dirt. Having seen other reviews of this place it is obvious that We are not alone in thinking this.

I was really happy with the friendliness of the staff. The room was nice and neat. They even had coffee and muffins for breakfast. I liked the feeling of being able to leave my room and go straight to my car. Plus the bed was comfortable
