Cyrus Hotel, Topeka, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel
4.5/5101 Reviews
Hotel is located in central Topeka, close to Brown vs. Board of Education National Historic Site and the Kansas State Capitol. I lucked out because parking was free on Topeka city streets on weekends. The staff was extremely accommodating, giving me local recommendations and even bringing me a tub of ice (it was really hot when I was there). My room was large and frankly, fairly luxurious. The shower, especially, was spectacular. I don't know if I'll ever have the pleasure of staying in Topeka again, but if I do, this will be my destination.

While I personally did not stay at this location, I was there to visit with other families of our sons' baseball team as we were in town for a tournament. On both Friday and Saturday evenings, we were told we could not hang out in the common areas of the lobby after 10 pm. We brought in pizza for the boys and the staff was not accommodating at all to us and actually the second night we were told we could not eat any food or drink that was not purchased from the hotel in their lobby. In fact, we were at one point told we could not socialize in their bar/restaurant area or their lobby and we had to either go up to a room or go outside. Never have any of us encountered this at a DoubleTree or any other hotel, for that matter, before. There were other teams there as well so one would think if they would like to keep promoting their hotel for these purposes that they would go out of their way to be more accommodating to their guests and visitors. Therefore, I am happy that I did not spend money to stay at this hotel and would not recommend it for future visits to the area.

Sheraton Overland Park Hotel at the Convention Center
4.4/5101 Reviews
Pros -Seems like a recently refurbished hotel with relatively fast lifts. -Clean, large twin beds carpeted room with enough power points, iron and board, safe box, large TV, hair dryer, soap, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, coffee maker that can double up as kettle (flip the lid to find instructions on how to use). -Comfortable bed and pillows. -Aircon worked well (no heater) but can be slightly noisy. -Indoor heated pool and equipped gym. -Quiet and seems safe as it's away from tourist areas. -convention center connected to hotel Cons -Showerhead is fixed but good pressure, can change the water flow pattern, and easy to control water temperature/water heats up quickly. -Room can be relatively dim at night cos there are only 3 warm light lamps around. This is not a problem in the day time when sun comes in the large window. -Doors are thin so you can hear people outside talking or your neighbour if you're in a connected room. -Not much dining choices in the hotel or convention centre. Nearest fast food is 20 mins walk away -- Chick-fil-A or whataburger. Nearest open air mall or Walmart about 30 mins walk away.
