Practice the Art of Japanese Calligraphy (Shodō)
Japanese Calligraphy, or 
Shodō
, is an artistic practice that serves as a connection to Japanese culture. It involves expressing a wide range of characters, including 
Kanji
 (derived from Chinese characters) and 
Kana
 (the Japanese writing system).
The art is defined by three primary brush styles, each offering a unique aesthetic: the structured 
Square Style (
Kaisho
)
, the fluid 
Semi-Cursive (
Gyōsho
)
, and the dynamic 
Cursive (
Sōsho
)
. Intrinsic to Japanese culture, 
Shodō
 is a beautiful art form that lets you explore the nation's proud history.
Additional information
For ages 14+
All Material provided at no additional fee (ink, rice paper, brushes, mat, paper weight)
The instructor will teach in both Japanese and English depending on the participants.
Since ink stains are permanent, we recommend wearing dark clothing that you won't mind potentially getting ink on.
About the Instructor
Fusako Fujiki
 is a local Master Calligrapher whose connection to this art form began in childhood. Born and raised in Japan, she received formal artistic training and was granted her professional name by her own Master Japanese Calligrapher. With over 25 years of teaching experience in Metro Vancouver, she offers students the expertise of a deep cultural heritage combined with a highly developed teaching methodology.

Standing on the top of the park, you can see downtown Burnaby and the mountains in the distance, as well as downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park and the Lions Gate Bridge. The park is rich in vegetation, and you can smell the fresh air of the pine forest while walking along the forest trails. The park is famous for the Kamui Mintara sculptures created by Japanese sculptor Nuburi Toko and his son, which symbolize the harmonious unity of humans, animals, nature and God. The sculpture group consists of 29 hand-carved logs with animal images such as brown bears, owls, salmon and killer whales engraved on them.

Deer Lake Park

If you are looking for a good place to relax around Vancouver, Deer Lake Park in Burnaby is definitely worth a visit! It is like a paradise in the city, with beautiful lakes and mountains.
There is a flat wooden boardwalk around the lake, which is perfect for walking, jogging, or enjoying nature with children and pets. The lake is sparkling, seagulls and mallards are playing in the water, and snow-capped mountains are looming in the distance. The park is free, the lawn is suitable for picnics, and kayaks can be rented on the lake. In spring, flowers are in full bloom, rhododendrons are particularly romantic, and outdoor concerts in summer are even more lively. Especially in autumn, Deer Lake is even more beautiful, and it is a great place to enjoy maple leaves around Vancouver. Parking at Deer Lake is also very convenient, highly recommended!

Central Park

Central Park in Burnaby is a free public facility built for local residents. It has a small golf course, tennis courts, a children&#39;s play area, and several kilometers of trails. The park is densely populated with trees and there are many waterfowl around two small ponds. It is a great place for walking and jogging.
