Family Workshop: Papermaking | The Harley Foundation

In this session, children will learn how to create their own handmade paper using recycled paper and card. They’ll explore how to add colour and texture to their papers using natural materials like flower petals, leaves, and seeds. Children will learn every part of the papermaking process – from pulping paper to pressing and shaping – and will leave with their own unique handmade sheets to take home. Please note, papers will still be damp at the end of the workshop and will need to dry fully at home. Please bring an apron or old shirt, a hair bobble for tying back long hair, and a large carrier bag to carry your wet papers home. All other materials and equipment will be provided. Booking Information This event has been provided in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council. All participants are required to complete a short registration form on booking. Tutor Profile: Shobhna Patel This workshop is taught by Shobhna Patel . Shobhna is a professional paper artist, author and illustrator. She creates intricate paper sculptures using contemporary paper-engineering techniques, and has published several books including The Nutcracker: A Papercut Pop-up Book . Since 2009, she has taught creative workshops for all ages across the UK and online, sharing her skills to inspire creativity and support well-being. Key details Date: 6 - 20 July 2025 Sessions: Sundays: 12:30pm - 2:30pm No. sessions: 3 Venue: Worksop Library, Worksop For ages: 19+ Group size: 5 - 12 Cost: FREE - £21 About this course This course is for anyone that loves fabrics and stitching, or those who want to have a go at creative projects. Over the course you will gain the confidence to create prints with traditional carved blocks from India and explore how you embellish them with stitching and accessories (such as beads etc). You must provide their own substance to print onto this can be fabric such as cotton and sewing kit including sewing threads and embroidery floss or twisted threads. By attending this course, you will understand the equipment and how to print with wooden blocks. We will explore colour theory, design development and structure patterns to help you create your projects. We will examine different artists and their use of patterns and identify where these can be included in our own work. You will also develop your stitching skills, enabling you to complete your work.
