Julie July Band Acoustic | Hen & Chicken
Jul 27, 2025 (UTC+1)
Southville
Julie July Band Acoustic
Four members of the touring Folk Rock Band performing original music inspired by the folk, rock and blues movement of the 60s & 70s but with a contemporary 21st Century twist. With over a decade of gigging and recording experience, they make their debut performance at the Hen and Chicken Bristol - celebrating a new album, 'Flight of Fancy', together with songs from their critically acclaimed albums ‘Lady of the First Light’ and ‘Wonderland’ plus a selection of Sandy Denny favourites.
The line-up features musicians with strong Folk-Rock roots including Dik Cadbury, who played with Decameron and Steve Hackett, on bass, acoustic guitar and vocals. Julie July brings powerful, emotional and crystal-clear lead vocals with a voice that really echoes the late Sandy Denny. Australian born Caley Groves brings fairy dust and magic to the mix with his acoustic guitar and offers a Latin, gypsy-jazz twist to the band’s live performances. Last, but not least, one of the band’s songwriters, Carol Lee Sampson, contributes soulful and heartfelt performances on keyboards and vocals.

VOICES & VIRTUES: A Whole School Performance | Elmhurst Ballet School
Jul 4, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bristol
Voices & Virtues, our exciting programme of summer shows in 2025, celebrates artists of the future while honouring classical traditions. The performances promise to spotlight the talents of Elmhurst Ballet School students from the Lower and Upper School, and the Class of 2025 graduate year, Elmhurst Ballet Company. Following on from Elmhurst Ballet Schools’ historic centenary and 20-year anniversary of being based in Birmingham, 2025’s Summer Show will turn brightly towards the school’s future with Voices & Virtues; a mixed bill celebrating the duality of dynamic, fresh ideas alongside deeply respected traditions. In a range of choreography and styles of dance, Voices & Virtues has allowed each year group of students to work with both Elmhurst tutors and external artists. The privilege of working with external artists means that the students have all experienced the creative process first hand. Ballet, Contemporary, and Jazz will all be on display during Voices & Virtues, highlighting the versatility of Elmhurst students. Our Voices programme will platform the influences and visions of the next generation of dance creatives, listening closely to the input of our students as they collaborate with pioneering choreographers. Eyes will be on contemporary dance with the year 13 students who have worked with Cuban choreographer Miguel Altunaga, who makes a welcome return to Elmhurst after the success of last year’s City of a Thousand Trades. And former Rambert Dance Company dancer and current Associate Choreographer for Ballet Black, Jacob Wye, is working with the year 11 students to create a new contemporary piece. Birmingham-based dancer, teacher, and choreographer, Rachel Hunt, is working with the year 8 students, blending her expertise in hip hop, Latin, ballroom, and commercial styles into fresh, high-energy choreography. Our Virtues programme will highlight the rigour, beauty and technical prowess of classical dance traditions, respecting the school’s strong values and high aspirations. Ballet highlights include excerpts from arguably the greatest ballet of all time- Sir Peter Wright’s Swan Lake- performed by the year 13 students. There are also new ballet pieces by two former Elmhurst students- Rosie Price (for the years 7 and 8 students), and current Birmingham Royal Ballet artist Olivia Chang-Clarke (for the year 9 students). And to further celebrate the special relationship between Birmingham Royal Ballet and Elmhurst Ballet School, BRB Principal dancer Lachlan Monaghan has worked with the years 12 and 13 students to create a new work. VOICES AND VIRTUES: A Whole School Performance | Elmhurst Ballet School
Jul 9, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bristol
Voices and Virtues, our exciting programme of summer shows in 2025, celebrates artists of the future while honouring classical traditions. The performances promise to spotlight the talents of Elmhurst Ballet School students from the Lower and Upper School, and the Class of 2025 graduate year, Elmhurst Ballet Company. Following on from Elmhurst Ballet Schools’ historic centenary and 20-year anniversary of being based in Birmingham, 2025’s Summer Show will turn brightly towards the school’s future with Voices and Virtues; a mixed bill celebrating the duality of dynamic, fresh ideas alongside deeply respected traditions. In a range of choreography and styles of dance, Voices and Virtues has allowed each year group of students to work with both Elmhurst tutors and external artists. Curtain up at 7pm. Please note: Doors will not open before 6:30pm for access into the main school building. Parking: Parking on-site is extremely limited. There is parking available a short walking distance away from Elmhurst at the MAC. Jyotsna Srikanth: Carnatic Nomad | Arnolfini Arts
Jul 11, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Bristol
Hailing from Bangalore and now based in London, Jyotsna Srikanth is Europe’s foremost South Indian Carnatic violinist, renowned for her versatility, innovation, and technical mastery. An extraordinary and versatile violinist (★★★★ The Guardian) Jyotsna Srikanth presents and explores the lush green melodic possibilities in the Carnatic genre. Carnatic is another name for South Indian Classical music; a musical form that has seen few changes for centuries and that has steadily adapted itself from the temple music form to its current comprehensive system that has spread across continents. Captivating audiences with the intricate aesthetics and technical nuances of the Carnatic tradition, as interpreted through her innovative approach to the Western violin. (World Music Central) Her music illuminates Carnatic musical tradition in kaleidoscopic colour. Approaching every musical interaction with a forward-thinking outlook and elastic expressivity, Jyotsna is just as likely to be found reveling in raga rotations or jamming in free jazz, often marrying the two. Jyotsna Srikanth will be presenting a traditional, unspoilt and orthodox form of Carnatic music along with Abhiram Sahathevan on mridangam (two-sided drum) and Ram Sivasubramaniam on khanjira (one sided drum). A demonstration of Indo-jazz with a southern slant at its finest. (★★★★ Jazzwise)
