Richard J. Williams explores the hidden stories around the most polarising feature of the contemporary city: the urban motorway.
In the demonology of the contemporary city, is there anything more toxic than the expressway? Dividing neighbourhoods, depressing land values, concentrating atmospheric pollutants, the mammoth infrastructure of the expressway is now increasingly crumbling into the ground.
How did we build the expressway world in the first place? And what are we going to do now with it now?
Drawing from his forthcoming book,
The Expressway World
(Polity, 2025), architectural historian Richard J. Williams take us on a journey along the world’s great expressways. From major recent abolitions such as Boston’s Central Artery (buried and covered by a park) and Seoul’s Cheonggyecheon (replaced with an artificial river), Williams explores how expressways that have become weird attractions in their own right, from London’s Westway and São Paulo’s Minhocão, celebrated in art and literature, or in the of Newcastle’s Central Motorway mundane, if still contested features of urban life.
In his analysis, Williams proposes, counterintuitively, that we find ways to live with the expressway world and to adapt it to a different future, inspired by the many examples where people have already reinvented this challenging legacy on their own terms.

How Speed Dating Works in Newcastle
When you arrive at the Newcastle venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date.
You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don't.
At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day.
Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink. Once all the dates are over you have the opportunity to stay on at the venue to mingle freely with others. Please remember to take your dating card home with you to assist you in entering in your ticks and potential matches.
Post Event
No later than 11am the following morning our matching system will be unlocked for you to enter your ticks from the previous evening. You have all day to tick as many people as you like from the night before. We guarantee you will find someone you will want to see again, otherwise we will give you your next

Northern Forestry Conference | Discovery Museum
May 15, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Spruce Valley Township
This May, Newcastle will play host to a major conference to explore the opportunities associated with growing the forestry and timber processing industries across the north of England. Already the powerhouse of English forestry, the woodlands and timber-using businesses of the north deliver so much more than thousands of jobs and hundreds of millions in GVA.
Trees and forests provide the backdrop to so many aspects of our daily lives, whether it’s the recreation and cultural opportunities afforded by major public forests such as Grizedale, Kielder and Dalby, or the opportunity for short walks and time out in nature in a local small woodland. Trees absorb noise and air pollution, help mitigate floods, and provide valuable habitats for many of our native species, as well as locking up carbon from the atmosphere for decades – or generations if they’re turned into construction products, furniture and other long-lasting products. We’re also increasingly turning to our forests to meet the needs of society for other low carbon products, such as fibre for clothing, packaging, bio-based chemicals and plastic substitutes, and even the jet fuel that takes us on our summer holidays.
However, it’s not all plain sailing - the forestry sector and the businesses it relies on face an unprecedented set of man-made and natural challenges. These range from increased competition from other land uses, coupled with labour and fibre shortages, through to the growing need to decarbonise forest operations, deal with an increasingly challenging palette of diseases and extreme weather events, and a pressing need to reinvigorate the social licence for productive forestry. The sector can only deal with this daunting array of issues if it comes together, learns from others and works collaboratively to create the right environment to thrive at a regional scale.
Speakers
The interactive event will engage the audience on the direct economic and low carbon contribution forests and trees can make to the north, and the opportunities that growing the sector can bring. The event will be brought to life by an exceptional line-up of high profile speakers:
Dougal Driver, CEO, Grown in Britain
Professor Patricia Thornley, Director, Energy and Bioproducts Research Institute
Paul Brannen, Director Of Public Affairs, CEI-Bois and EOS, Confederation of Timber Industries
Rebecca Smith, Journalist and Author of Rural: The Lives of the Working Class Countryside
Ross Lowrie, Principal Manager (Low Carbon Growth & Net Zero), North East Combined Authority
Ian Tubby (tbc), Head of Policy and Advice, Forestry Commission
Andrew Weatherall, Woodlands Principal Policy Officer, RSPB
Dr Jonathan Scurlock, Chief Advisor Renewable Energy and Climate Change, National Farmers Union
Jo O'Hara, FutureArk
Alex MacLennan, Recreation and Public Affairs Manager, Forestry England
Stuart Dainton, Head of Land Management & Estates, National Forest Company
Rosanna Curtis, Northwoods Project Manager, Reheat
Who is the Conference for?
Not just foresters is the short answer! The conference is intended to help bridge the gap between those already working in or with the products of our forests, and public and private sector organisations and decision-makers who would like to understand the opportunities that growing increasingly critical sector can play. MPs and their researchers, county and local councillors, economic development, sustainability, energy, and carbon professionals, alongside business owners, innovators and investors are all expected to attend the event to learn, network and plan for the green, low carbon future that forests and trees can deliver for the north.
We look forward to welcoming you!

With a brand new workshop (motivational AND practical) to set the tone at each event, a huge focus on mindset and business strategy (hello my favourite topics!), a beautifully catered lunch and structured networking, it’s time to get out there in person, change your mindset and truly grow your business.
This isn't stuffy networking. It isn't naff coffee and flat conversations. This event is about growth: personal and business growth. And you can feel that energy the second you walk in the door.
As an online business coach, I've scaled three companies in three different sectors, billing seven figures in personal sales. I am now on a mission to show good-hearted people how to properly position, market and sell their incredible offers to do the same.
The things is, we need a few things to pull that off: the right growth mindset, the right scaling strategy, a sense of belief and support, and a willingness to get out there and market and sell our services. This is what I'm all about. In fact, I LOVE this stuff and have dedicated my life to showing good-hearted people how to do this properly, challenging you to step into you full purpose, finding and removing the subconscious blocks that hold you back, and supporting and celebrating your attempts, wins and fails along the way.
As I always say to my clients: To succeed more, you're going to fail more. So let's go fail our way to the top!
-
"If you haven't been before, you simply must go or if you have been, get the next event in your diary now.
A room full of like minded and inspiring people, led by Lisa with her humour, energy and wisdom

Blackfriars Beer Festival | Blackfriars Restaurant
May 23, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Spruce Valley Township
Get ready for an unforgettable May Bank Holiday weekend as we host our first-ever Beer Festival! Set in the surroundings of our 13th-century medieval friary, this is the ultimate way to kick back, relax and enjoy some of the best local brews.
Join us in our Cloister Garden, complete with heated parasols, fire pits, festoon lighting, lush greenery, rustic stone and wood features. With all-weather level access, you’ll be able to enjoy everything the festival has to offer in comfort. Or step inside our historic Medieval Banquet Hall, where local brewers will be showcasing their craft beers.
You’ll have the opportunity to sample beers from eight fantastic local breweries, including our very own St Dominic’s Brewery, as we celebrate its first anniversary!
Founded in 2024, St Dominic’s Brewery stays true to Dominican brewing traditions. In medieval times, brewing ale was as common as bread-making for the friars. After the Dissolution, when the friary was abandoned, the Brewers & Bakers Guild held their quarterly meetings in the Chapter House. Today, we continue this rich history—brewing our own ale alongside our daily bread.
Enjoy Blackfriars Street Food straight from the BBQ, sip on wine, cocktails and soft drinks from our classic bar, soak in the festival vibes with live music on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and bring your furry friends because our Cloister Garden is dog-friendly!
Don’t miss out on this exciting new festival! Book your tickets now and be part of history at Blackfriars Beer Festival 2025.
