Wine & watercolour | High Bridge Works

Apr 30, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Spruce Valley Township
Cultural Experiences
Paintbrushes at the ready. What better way to practice mindfulness than by creating a little work of art? Amy Pearson is going to be sharing her story with us and then running a watercolour workshop. Amy has been drawing and creating for as long as she can remember and has a degree in Fashion Design. During uni, she completed an internship with her favourite designer, Alexander McQueen (imagine) and had her eyes opened to the totally wild world of high fashion. After uni, Amy worked as a lingerie designer for a time before coming back to the North East and developing her style as an illustrator and independent artist. Her workshop isn’t about creating a masterpiece – there are zero rules or expectations. It’s about the process and the experience which encourages you to relax and experiment. Amy will give us a few simple guided exercises to get the creativity flowing and the rest will be down to self-expression and giving it a go. As always, there’ll be a delectable array of cheeses and wine/non-alcoholic options. As per usual, we expect tickets to be snapped up so get cracking. _ Our meet-ups are inclusive and supportive spaces and we welcome anyone who’s creative (in whatever form that takes) to join us. We also recognise that our male allies can support our cause further by hearing the thoughts and opinions voiced at our get-togethers. We only ask that our guests respect the inclusive atmosphere and continue to engage in discussion and idea generation for the promotion and support of equal opportunities for female and non-binary identifying creatives. May 1, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Spruce Valley Township
Cultural Experiences
How Speed Dating Works in Newcastle When you arrive at the Newcastle venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date. You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don't. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink. Once all the dates are over you have the opportunity to stay on at the venue to mingle freely with others. Please remember to take your dating card home with you to assist you in entering in your ticks and potential matches. Post Event No later than 11am the following morning our matching system will be unlocked for you to enter your ticks from the previous evening. City Drawing Masterclass | Farrell Centre

May 4, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Spruce Valley Township
Arts
Fine Art
Sharpen your drawings skills and understanding of the city in the second iteration of this special Masterclass series led by artist Mark Bletcher. Running across May and June 2025, the second iteration of the City Drawing Masterclass will take place en plein air . Under the expert guidance of artist Mark Bletcher we will head out into the urban landscape to explore and depict the modernist city. Bletcher will help you take advantage of a range of drawing techniques and processes to deepen your understanding and approach to observational drawing – learning how to add light, depth, and colour to our sketches. The course will be supported by a further guided tour and special access to our exhibition Brasília of the North , with unique insights from its curators providing context to the city you will be drawing. Refreshments and materials will be provided, and each participant will receive a sketchbook to continue their drawing practice beyond the course. This Masterclass series is suitable for all levels and is an excellent opportunity for those wanting to hone their craft or to try something new. 4 May – Week 1: Architecture In our first session we will begin with a curator-led tour of the exhibition Brasília of the North and discussion of the Concrete Dreams project of which it is part. From there, we will head over to the iconic Civic Centre as well as explore some of the notable modernist buildings on the Newcastle University campus. 18 May – Week 2: Infrastructure Infrastructure will be the focus of the second Masterclass as we take advantage of the Farrell Centre’s location in the city centre to depict some of the city’s striking carparks, elevated walkways and, of course, the concrete delights of the Central Motorway. 1 June – Week 3: Landscape Newcastle is unusual in having such a large expanse of landscape in the shape of the Town Moor so near the city centre. Yet this too bears the imprint of the city’s modernist moment, with two hills created from the spoils from excavating the Central Motorway. In this session, we explore how to depict the city’s ‘modernist greenery’. 15 June – Week 4: Develop In our final session we develop our sketches from the first three sessions in the studio setting of the Farrell Centre and reflect on our portfolios of drawings. Booking The cost for the course is £80. These masterclasses are design to be informal spaces to share ideas, chat and ask questions. If you have any questions about the course please get in touch. Please note, you must be able to attend all 4 sessions as refunds cannot be issued. Information Source: Farrell Centre | eventbrite

PFAS – The story so far and lessons learned in construction | DAC Beachcroft LLP Newcastle

May 6, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Spruce Valley Township
Cultural Experiences
PFAS are a class of synthetic chemicals used since the 1940s that are fast becoming an issue on many development sites – particularly brownfield – across the UK. These 'forever chemicals' are a major concern due to their serious risk to human health. For construction and demolition companies, they are an additional contaminant to deal with as they fall within the scope of the EA's environmental permitting regime. While PFAS creates risk to construction projects, there are ways to mitigate against them. This workshop will cover... What are PFAS and what risks do they pose to construction, demolition and development ? Introduction to the PFAS Risk Assessment Database to rapidly screen sites for PFAS risk. How do construction companies manage/mitigate the risks? Can PFAS remediation unlock problem sites? Case studies from two live projects. Delivered by Duncan Sanders, who is the PFAS lead within ATG Group along with a 'PFAS Geological Expert'. They will help you gain a clearer understanding of the nature of the problem and what options are available to you if PFAS are discovered on your sites. May 12, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Spruce Valley Township
Cultural Experiences
In early 2024, The Guardian raised questions about the "sudden rise of AuDHD," a term for the overlap between ADHD and Autism. Until recently, many in the medical field considered these two conditions separate. In this workshop, Dr. Tom Nicholson will explore how our understanding of ADHD and autism has evolved, challenging traditional views of neurodivergence and the way social media often portrays it as a "superpower." Could there be a more nuanced way to understand neurodivergence? This talk will dive into the core traits of both ADHD and autism, while shedding light on the experiences of those who live with both. Why do many people not realise they are autistic until after being diagnosed with ADHD and starting stimulant medication? How can someone be the life of the party yet feel drained afterward? Join us to explore these questions and more. Doors open at 7pm , talk starts at 7:30pm - come down early to grab a good seat! Follow us on IG @seedtalks About your host: Dr Tom Nicholson is an Assistant Professor of mental health nursing and a speaker, trainer, and advocate for neurodiversity and ADHD. Tom's PhD project explores the lived experiences of parents whose children are undergoing ADHD assessment, listening to, and retelling their changing stories over a period of two years: From waiting list, to diagnosis, to living with a diagnosis. Diagnosed with ADHD in childhood, Tom uses his personal lived experience of ADHD alongside his clinical and academic background to give a multitude of perspectives to his work.   Testimonials from our guests ⭐ It was insightful, interesting, engaging, informative, educational & fun all wrapped up in one talk. - Anon  ⭐ Brilliant well paced talks for us ND folks.- Christine K ⭐ It felt like a really great session with well rounded knowledge and it felt like a safe space with a safe speaker who genuinely cared and understood the shared experience. - Anon Information Source: Seed Talks | eventbrite
