Dyslexia Advocacy Day: Literacy for All | New York State Capitol
May 14, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Albany
What:
Dyslexia Advocacy Day builds support for the dyslexic community and those with related learning disabilities. We share strategies and experiences, and feature legislative solutions.
Who:
Allies include parents, students, advocates, educators, and legislators from throughout New York State.
Why:
With only 35% of our fourth graders reading proficiently, we are leaving far too many students behind. Dyslexia is common - in every class of 30 students, 5 or 6 of them have dyslexia, but most of them will not be identified for years, and many never are. Let’s work together to change that.
Students
can receive letters from Assemblymember Simon for their school noting that this is an excused absence.
Be part of the conversation!

Program Agenda:
10:30am: Gather in The Capitol
11:00am: Rally and Press Conference
with Assemblymember Simon, legislative cosponsors, advocates, and families
12:00pm: Reception

Meet with your State Legislators:

What is Fantastic Foundations?
Fantastic Foundations is a system that puts key aspects of communication at the heart of your teaching. By implementing Jane Considine's methods, pupils' language will be nurtured through developing ideas, strengthening talk and widening writing opportunities.
Fantastic Foundations is based on three guiding principles:
1. Understanding of the uniqueness of each child
2. Nurturing deep talk and developing listening
3. Providing a rich repertoire of real and imagined experiences to ignite writing
Key benefits Fantastic Foundations:
Support for teachers so that they have a deeper and more flexible knowledge of writing in the early years.
Pupils who understand more about writing as they develop their expertise.
Standards improve because many worked examples are provided over the year that extend understanding through a wide range of genres and non-fiction text types.

The Furious Bongos play Zappa | The Linda WAMC's Performing Arts Studio
May 3, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Albany
We’re only in it for the money.
HAHAHAHA
Actually, we’re just a bunch of professional musicians with pretty diverse backgrounds who decided to take on a pretty big challenge and have some fun in the process.
Now, you might ask, “Oh yeah? ‘Professional’ musicians, eh? What makes you think you can play Frank’s music as well as [insert Zappa family member here]?”
Well…you might not have heard of us individually, but you have heard of the people we’ve spent our careers working with (and we don’t mean “I played a 10am slot at a festival once that was headlined by Famous Artist X”):
Yo Yo Ma, Mick Fleetwood, BB King, REM, Vinnie Colaiuta, Oasis, LA Philharmonic, Madison Symphony, Arthur Barrow, Munich Philharmonic, Bryan Beller, India Arie, Popa Chubby, Limelight: A Tribute To Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Chicago Lyric Opera, Arrested Development, Madison Opera, blah blah blah....you get the idea.
When it came to the music, Frank was constantly changing things, and he allowed his band members to bring their unique voices to the table. He also understood that his live performances were entertainment: it's supposed to be a rock show, not a piano recital.
With that in mind, we don’t think playing Song X from Album Y note-for-note while staring at our shoes is the proper way to go about this.
The result of that approach (combined with a lot of homework) is a show that pays respect to Zappa’s legacy, but is also new and different and dangerous and FUN, with lots of eyebrows.
Kinda like Frank.
