The Bridge Between Worlds - an evening with Dr Gavin Francis | The Wee Bookshop
May 20, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Dollar
Award-winning author and Edinburgh-based GP Gavin Francis’s
The Bridge Between Worlds
is the latest in a very diverse non-fiction back catalogue, from travel writing to medical memoirs.
In The Bridge Between Worlds, Gavin Francis explores bridges old and new, man-made or natural, musing on the view from the bridge through history, geopolitics, psychology and literature. Against the ever-growing obsession with national borders in politics and the media, bridges – whether seen as functional, emblematic or aesthetical – both unite and divide us. From the Tweed to the Thames, Bosnia to Brooklyn, Singapore to Siberia, The Bridge Between Worlds reflects on the bridges between nations and individuals, how they act as frontiers and reflects on the lives of people either side of the border.
Francis is a thoughtful and engaging writer, his prose has a lightness of touch which is a delight to read. He explores how we might better think of a connected world, and the empathy and conciliation that that might engender, demonstrating what the building of bridges has meant to our civilisation, how crossings can enrich our lives, and the price we pay when we tear them down.
'Gavin Francis has written an exquisite book on a structure we usually take for granted. This is a fascinating and delightful read.'
Alexander McCall Smith
'
Informative, imaginative and hugely enjoyable. Who knew? A bridge can take you anywhere!'
Sara Wheeler
Gavin Francis is a wonderful writer - thoughtful, engaging, immensely knowledgeable and supremely human.'
Bill Bryson

Island Dreams: Mapping an Obsession

was published in spring 2023 by Oxford University Press
. Free For All – Why the NHS is Worth Saving
is a passionate defence of the founding principles of the NHS, and an exploration of how and why it must be saved.
The Bridge Between Worlds – a brief history of connection
explores the power of bridges, actual and metaphorical, to bring people together – across forty years of travel, six continents, and 2,000 years of engineering.

Hyaluron Pen Certification
Do you want to be the first in your business, salon or spa to offer this amazing service to your clients? Get ready to train on this course and take your career to the next level!
What Is A Hyaluron Pen?
Simply put, The Pen is the future. It allows anyone with the proper training to provide their clients with a Hyaluronic Acid Treatment. This can be done on lips, deep lines and provides a revitalization treatment for the face. HA forms a super hydrating net over the skin and delivers water to parched skin over time. Hyaluronic Acid is known to have an amazing water-binding capacity, making it ideal for skin hydration and that means the skin is continuously hydrated, plump and healthy.
HA TREATMENTS ARE NOW A REALITY THANKS TO ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY. USING HYALURONIC ACID BASED PRODUCTS, OUR CUTTING EDGE TECHNIQUE CAN TRANSFORM YOUR SERVICES YOU OFFER TO YOUR CLIENTS.
What is involved in the procedure?
The procedure is quite simple and the HA used is safe as the human body produces the exact same acid, it is pretty impossible that anyone would get any sort of allergic reaction or complication from the HA itself. The more Hyaluronic Acid there is inside the Epidermis layer of the skin, the more water is retained keeping its moisture and making the appearance of the skin more youthful.
Hyaluron Pen … applies HA.
How much can you charge for the procedure?
Based on your state, area of location and techniques you do. Minimum price to charge as a New Technician is $300 and as you become skilled in your craft you can charge up to $500 for 1 ml of Hyaluronic Acid. This is great for 30 minutes of work! This is a great return on investment. You can get back what you have invested in your training quickly!
Hyaluron Pen Device
Our controlled dosage delivery with locking function ensures an exact delivery and thus enables SAFE working and only reaches the upper skin layers.
This is a needle free aesthetic device which was specifically created and technically optimized for this purpose and to be solely used by beauty professionals.
Advantages of Hyaluron Treatment:
– Painless Better and faster absorption of Hyaluronic Acid

Ambrose Parry - The Death of Shame | The Wee Bookshop
Jun 11, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Dollar
Join both Chris Brookmyre and Dr Marisa Haetzman, who co-write the historical crime novels set in Edinburgh under Ambrose Parry, to celebrate the publication of the fifth and final instalment in the Raven and Fisher Mystery series. Brookmyre and Haetzman will be in conversation with each other.
About
The Death of Shame
:
1854, Edinburgh. Respectable faces hide private sins.
Apprentice Sarah Fisher is helping to fund Dr Will Raven’s emerging medical practice in exchange for being secretly trained as a medic. Sarah needs no instruction in the inequalities that beset her gender, but even she has her eyes opened to a darker reality when a relative seeks her help in searching for her missing daughter. Annabel Banks was promised a situation in a prestigious household, but there has been no word from her since she left home and the agency that arranged her position says she never appeared.
Sarah’s inquiries lead her to reforming campaigners trying to publicise the plight of the hundreds of girls ensnared in Edinburgh’s houses of assignation.
Sarah learns how young women are lured, deceived, trafficked and raped, leaving them ruined in the eyes of a society obsessed with moral purity, and where virginity is prized as a lucrative commodity.
Drawing upon real historical events,
The Death of Shame
takes Raven and Sarah into a treacherous labyrinth of exploitation, corruption, and immorality.
About the
Author
Ambrose Parry is a pseudonym for a collaboration between Chris Brookmyre and Marisa Haetzman. The couple are married and live in Scotland. Chris Brookmyre is an international bestselling and multi-award-winning author.
The Death of Shame
marks his 30th published novel. Dr Marisa Haetzman is a consultant anaesthetist of twenty years’ experience, whose research for her Masters in the History of Medicine uncovered the material upon which their novels are based.
There will be a signing after the event.
Vouchers can be redeemed on the night of the event against a single copy of
The Death of Shame
.
