Firefighter Have A Go Day | Central Fire and Rescue Station, Lancaster Place
Sep 29, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Lancaster
We are recruiting Firefighters across the Service. Prior to applications opening, we are holding several 'Have a Go' taster days. These will be taking place over the coming weeks to give people an insight into what the role of a Firefighter entails, as well as the required strength, fitness and aptitude levels. It will also give you the chance to find out more information on how rewarding a career in the fire and rescue service is, and what paths of progression there are. The event is free, and there is no obligation to apply to be a Firefighter if you attend, but we'd love it if you do! Equally, you do not have to attend a 'Have a Go' day to be eligible to apply; it simply gives you an understanding of the job-related tests you will need to successfully complete upon application, and allows you to ask any questions you may have. Please note: You MUST be at least 18 years of age at the start of the initial training course. There is no upper age limit. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a pair of thick socks with you to make sure your boots are as comfortable as possible. All other equipment and clothing will be provided. You will only need to attend one session throughout the day and this should last no more than 2hrs,so please only book one session time that suits you. During the 'Have a Go' session you’ll be expected to carry out several physical activities in full fire kit. Please ensure you bring a water bottle and trainers with you. Please arrive 10 minutes before your session start time to allow for registration and fitting of the kit for the job-related tests. Due to the limited number of spaces and the popularity of these sessions, please only book one place. If you cannot make your session, please cancel your order by going to www.eventbrite.co.uk - this will allow someone else to take your place. Please note there is no parking at the Fire Station. You must have a Leicestershire postcode to be able to apply to be a Firefighter.

MOAH’s sensory-friendly programming boasts an array of resources and services for neurodivergent guests before and during the museum experience. Beginning with the social narrative, which is available on MOAH’s website, guests can read a first-person description of a trip to MOAH, with important details regarding parking, entrance/exit points, restrooms, and how to access on-site sensory-friendly resources. Guests can attend special open hours, which occur before the museum opens to the public. During these special open hours, the lighting in the museum is dimmed and the audio components of artworks are lowered. Upon arrival at the museum, guests are offered a sensory-friendly programming map, which pin-points changes in light and noise, along with the exact locations of hands-on sensory-friendly programming activities. Guests with hyper/hypo-sensitivities also have access to a take-a-break space on the bottom level of the museum. This room is sectioned off from main walkways and contains calming tools and water within a quiet, dimly lit space. Speech cards, in both Spanish and English, are available at the guest services desk to assist non-verbal visitors. Optional sensory-friendly programming activities include the multi-sensory tour and a hands-on art activity. The multi-sensory tour is a self-guided tour with stations throughout the museum. Each station focuses on a single work of art and includes an object or objects that can be used to enhance the viewer’s sensory experience of the artwork. Waterstones Lancaster Welcomes Cricketing Legend Jimmy Anderson | Marketgate Shopping Centre
Nov 12, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Lancaster
One of the true cricketing greats, Jimmy Anderson recounts in his autobiography Finding The Edge his truly remarkable story - from his early career at Lancashire to success with England and a quartet of stunning Ashes victories. 'As a player, you don't get a chance to reflect much - there's always the next over to bowl, the next game to play - and so I can't wait to get into this, to tell the story of the journey so far, because it's been truly unforgettable.' 21 years. 188 Test Matches. 704 Test Wickets. This is the final word on a spectacular career spanning over 20 years from one of England's greatest ever bowlers, Jimmy Anderson. A story of dedication and resilience, Jimmy gives his unfiltered take on his experiences coming of age as a 15- year-old playing for Burnley Cricket Club, the astronomic ascent to making his international debut at twenty years old and every astonishing moment in the 21 years since. Told with the honesty, humility and dry humour that have made the public fall in love with Jimmy, this is the book that reveals it all. Celebrating the soaring highs: facing international greats such as Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar and winning the Ashes four times. Reflecting on the tough lows: crushing defeats and the shock of being dropped. Finally, his resurgence under Brendon McCullum to close out his career with his 700th wicket, all alongside his teammates and lifelong friends on the England team. This is a no-holds-barred tell-all of one of the most extraordinary cricket careers of all time.
Jimmy will be signing copies in store from 12.30pm - entrance to the signing queue is by ticket only. Please get your tickets soon to avoid disappointment. Please note - there will be no posed photography. We will take photos for you as you are chatting with Jimmy & getting your book signed. Please also note - due to timing restraints, Jimmy won't be signing any memorabilia or other merchandise.

What does descriptive writing do? There’s an idea that description is only for painting a picture in the reader’s mind. But what does that picture look like? What is its atmosphere and mood? In this workshop, We will look at examples of atmospheric, descriptive writing and identify the ways that description can be a propulsive force in a story, carrying many messages about our characters, settings, and the main ideas of a text. This talk and generative exercises will celebrate descriptive writing, and reveal how our choices can drive plot in a work of fiction far more than the simple mechanics of He said this; they did that.

Lancaster School of Architecture Autumn Lecture Series | Marcus Merriman Lecture Theatre, Lancaster University

31/44 believe in an architecture of continuity; moving forwards whilst working with the diverse, established characters and qualities of the places we find. As a profession we must participate in an urgent response to the climate emergency. In this rapidly evolving context is an architecture of continuity still possible? Can we achieve buildings with a mass and dignified presence within this alternative framework of evaluation? We know that there are serious carbon consequences in the production of many materials, including petro-chemically derived layers ubiquitous in contemporary construction. Meanwhile, well-managed and sustainable supply chains for regenerative materials such as timber are not yet established. Change will therefore need to be incremental, interim solutions hybrid. It is a challenging time to be an architect, but there is the tangible sense that through re-evaluation and conversation there is the potential to inspire. We’re seeking mass that’s as light as air.
