Leveraging UDL 3.0 to Increase Engagement | The Riviera Ridge School
Jul 25, 2025 (UTC-7)
Santa Barbara
As demographics shift in our independent school populations and our students represent more diverse backgrounds, experiences, and learning needs than ever before, you may be feeling stuck. As a teacher-leader or administrator, what may have always worked well in the past, is no longer effective. Formerly effective teaching strategies, practices, and systems are no longer serving our communities.
Ready for a shift? UDL 3.0 can serve as a powerful framework for increasing learner engagement and reintroducing a sense of joy for learning. Based on neuroscientific research, Universal Design for Learning shifts the focus away from “fixing” students who differ from a mythical “average” or standard, and calls us to look at accessibility of the overall design so that the learning environment is truly inclusive to all – respecting all of the multiplicities learners bring. With UDL, it isn’t about convincing students to learn our way; it’s about creating spaces that welcome students to learn their way.
Through interactive activities, collaboration, and reflection, you will learn practical strategies for designing with UDL 3.0 that can work in your context.
Join us for an all-day in-person workshop to gain familiarity with UDL and the major shifts associated with the recent 3.0 updates. We will then reconnect for three, 90-minute virtual sessions across the school year to focus on the design process, applying and reflecting on UDL-aligned strategies, and addressing relevant problems of practice.
Participants will:
Understand the major shifts behind UDL 3.0
Identify the dispositions, habits, and resources required to cultivate a brave learning space that affirms relationships, builds community, and promotes healthy dialogue in a diverse setting
Practice designing with UDL 3.0

Buddha Prajnaparamita is the manifestation of the perfection of wisdom of all Buddhas. She appears in a peaceful aspect, displaying the Perfection of Wisdom sutra, indicating her power to lead all living beings to Great Enlightenment.
The function of Prajnaparamita is to destroy
maras
- living beings’ obstacles to spiritual realizations. "If we are to attain temporary happiness while we remain in samsara, and if we are to progress unimpeded towards the ultimate happiness of liberation and enlightenment, we need a special method for averting and overcoming hindrances in general, and the four maras in particular." - from
New Heart of Wisdom
by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche
The empowerment is a guided meditation through which we connect to Buddha Prajnaparamita’s enlightened mind. By receiving these inspiring blessings, we can develop our own potential for a fearless heart and gain the confidence we need to progress along the spiritual path. Through the power of our continued practice and Prajnaparamita's blessings we can cultivate the courageous compassion of a Bodhisattva, someone who can bring enormous relief to our suffering world.

Santa Barbara Cemetery Walking Tour | Santa Barbara Cemetery

Santa Barbara
The Santa Barbara Cemetery is unique among cemeteries. Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the cemetery is home to actors, industrialists, authors, musicians, sports stars, and many of the town’s founders and leaders. The cemetery has also transcended through five separate incarnations: as a dusty, geometric town cemetery, as a rudely conceived rural cemetery, as a fitful lawn park cemetery, as an over-achieving memorial park, and as a local columbarium. The Santa Barbara Cemetery has embraced each of these phases and has built upon them, becoming in the end, a modern cemetery that is better than any of the models it followed.
