Simon Costin, Un/Common People and The Museum of British Folklore - a History Museum & Art Swindon is delighted to welcome Simon Costin, the director of the Museum of British Folklore, and one of the team of curators of our Wessex Museums Partnership exhibition Un/Common People: Folk Culture in Wessex. He’ll be talking about the museum, its fascinating folk collections and developing Un/Common People with the museums of Wessex: Swindon Museums, Wiltshire Museum, Salisbury Museum, Poole Museum and Dorset Museum. The Museum of British Folklore is the UK’s first ever museum dedicated to the seasonal customs and events of the UK. It’s also a collection in search of a home! Simon will talk about the museum’s collections early beginnings in 2009 and give an overview of its many exhibitions, including the blockbuster about folk costume, Making Mischief, at Compton Verney in Warwickshire, and looking at how Un/Common People: Folk Culture in Wessex came to be. Why folklore? Folk culture has seen a resurgence of interest in recent years, with more and more people getting out to celebrate the turning of the seasons, singing, dancing, processing, telling stories and making marvels. Simon’s been fascinated with folk customs and lore since he was a teenager, saying he finds it, ‘fantastical but real’. He’s been a member of the Gay Bogies, a Jack-in-the-Green troupe in Hastings, and he brings his experience as an artist, art director and exhibition designer to all his projects. He’s worked in the fashion industry with Alexander McQueen, and put on exhibitions in places as diverse as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and off-grid in a forest in Argyll. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain insight into the behind-the-scenes planning and execution of our latest exhibition and gain insights into the world of curation. Don't miss out on this exciting chance to interact with a leading figure in the art world! Information Source: Museum & Art Swindon | eventbrite

Curator Talk & Tour: A Very British Art Revolution - Reinventing Life Event Location: Museum & Art Swindon Join Kirsty Hartsiotis, one of the curators of A Very British Art Revolution , for an informal curator tour of the exhibition, all about how artists reassessed their lives, their subject matter and their responses to the British landscape after the First World War. The war had a profound effect on those who lived through it, whether as combatants, war artists, or civilians. In the interwar period many artists turned to the country- and seaside as not only places to create art, but also to live and work. At the same time, people's ordinary lives became the focus of study and artistic expression. As a Second World War approached, our day-to-day lives and the land itself became even more precious. We'll be exploring work by Paul Nash, John Piper, Katharine Pleydell-Bouverie, David Jones, Stanislawa de Karlowska and Julian Trevelyan, among others. Join Kirsty for a fascinating and in-depth look at the exhibition. Information Source: Museum & Art Swindon | eventbrite

Join us in the cozy comfort of our sofas for an unforgettable cinematic journey, and mark your calendars for our screenings of 'The Penguin Lessons' on Thursday 15th of May. Starring Steve Coogan, The Penguin Lessons follows Tom, a teacher starting a new job in a Buenos Aires boarding school in 1976. His teaching is interrupted by the fraught political violence taking place in Argentina, and spurs on a holiday to Uruguay where his life is changed after reluctantly rescuing a penguin from the beach. Based on the memoir by Tom Michell, the film offers a touching story about an unexpected pair, with a surprisingly deep and political core. Exploring the social unrest at the time in Argentina, it demonstrates how important personal connection is for giving us voice and strength to fight political oppression.
