Mia Spangenberg with Elizabeth DeNoma — Pirkko Saisio's 'Backlight' | Third Place Books
Jun 10, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
Third Place Books is pleased to welcome back translator Mia Spangenberg to our Ravenna store for a presentation on her recent translation of Finnish author Pirkko Saiso's novel Backlight, which follows a frustrated teenager into adulthood as she grapples with her queerness and her potential as a writer. Mia will be joined in conversation by translator and publishing consultant Elizabeth DeNoma. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About Backlight . .Pirkko Saisio, now a teenager, can't decide which she hates most: God, her father, or her growing breasts. Grandpa has moved into the room long promised to her, and Mother, overworked and distant, tries to keep the peace between her headstrong daughter and husband. When she's not escaping into her books, Pirkko has fun getting into trouble. That is until her Finnish teacher suggests she might have what it takes to be a real writer, but only if she is willing to work hard and make certain sacrifices. Years later, Pirkko spends the historic summer of 1968 working at a Swiss orphanage. The world is shifting around her, and to make matters even more complicated: she's homesick. At the orphanage no one understands her German, and away from home for the first time, she struggles to make sense of her suppressed queerness. In Backlight, the Finlandia Prize-winning author looks backward and inward, once again emerging, in Mia Spangenberg's sensitive translation, with an intimate portrait of a life lived in language. Mia Spangenberg translates from Finnish, Swedish, and German into English. Her published translations include works by Finlandia-prize winning authors Mari Manninen and Pirkko Saisio and acclaimed children’s book author and illustrator Marika Maijala. She was awarded the American-Scandinavian Foundation’s 2023 Nadia Christensen Translation Prize for her translation of Pirkko Saisio’s Lowest Common Denominator (Two Lines Press, 2024; Penguin Modern Classics 2025). Dr. Elizabeth DeNoma is a Seattle-based translator from Scandinavian languages, as well as a publishing consultant, and foreign rights manager with deep expertise in international literature. Her most recent translation is Snow: A History by Sverker Sörlin coming out in September of 2025 published by Penguin Random House. Pirkko Saisio (b. 1949) studied drama and completed her actor’s training in 1975. Her debut novel The Course of Life (Elämänmeno, 1975) won the J. H. Erkko Award. Saisio has been nominated for the Finlandia Prize seven times, winning it in with The Red Book of Farewells (Punainen erokirja, 2003). She has, among other awards, received Aleksis Kivi Prize and State Literature Award. Apart from novels, she has written numerous plays and scripts for film and television and is a well-known theatre director. Their Flight Assistance Program has covered over 125,000 miles so far, ensuring that those seeking gender-affirming care can get there safely. Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About An Anti-Zionist Path to Embodied Jewish Healing. . .Unapologetically anti-Zionist and firmly rooted in Jewish spiritual values—a liberatory model for Jewish healing.
Body-based tools and faith-based practices for processing trauma, reclaiming our agency, and building a world where never again means never again for anyone.
Dr. Wendy Elisheva Somerson, PhD, shows how Jewish history lives in Jewish bodies—and how antisemitism and oppression disrupt our access to safety, dignity, and belonging. This unmetabolized trauma can lock us into a survival state that brings historical grief into the present moment…and keep us from exploring critical questions that help us tend our legacies and live into a better world.
How does ancestral grief live on in our bodies and keep us from feeling safe—and how is that fear enacted on other peoples? How do we reconcile a history of persecution with the state power of Israel today?
Each chapter invites us back into the body, exploring healing as a spiritual and political reclamation. With skills-based wisdom for trauma, safety, spiritually grounded intentions, and resourcing ourselves for difficult conversations, this book also helps readers understand: Trauma and healing through our bodiesJewish longing, belonging, legacies of assimilationHealing shame—of not being Jewish enough, of being too much, and of being complicitEmbodied experiences of Jewish resilience, ritual, and griefRooted in justice, care, and spiritual depth, this book asks us to live into a Judaism beyond Zionism. It invites us to heal toward liberation—to reclaim Jewish faith and release Jewish identity from the colonial project of Israel in power, skill, and community. Wendy Elisheva Somerson (Wes) is a queer non-binary, disabled, cat-loving Ashkenazi Jewish somatic healer, writer, activist, and visual artist residing on Duwamish and Coast Salish land. One of the founders of the Seattle chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace, they have been active in Palestinian solidarity work for more than two decades. As a politicized healer, Wes works at the intersection of personal and collective healing with individuals, groups, and organizations. They are the creator and facilitator of Ruach, an ongoing anti-Zionist, body-based Jewish healing group. Ijeoma Oluo is a Seattle-based writer, speaker, and internet yeller. She is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling first book, So You Want To Talk About Race, Mediocre, and Be a Revolution. Her work on race and gender has been published in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and NBC News; and she has been featured on The Daily Show and NPR’s All Things Considered. Named on the TIME 100 Next list and The Root 100, she’s been awarded the Harvard Humanist of the Year Award, the American Humanist Association’s Feminist Humanist Award, Gender Justice League’s Media Justice Award, and the Equal Opportunity Institute’s Aubrey Davis Visionary Leadership Award. Selma Al-Aswad is a Palestinian-Syrian organizer and researcher based in Seattle. She has organized at the nexus of Palestine liberation and multiple feminist and anti-colonial social movements for the past 20 years, locally and transnationally, and currently organizes with the Palestinian Feminist Collective. Deeply inspired by her mystical lineages, Selma is passionate about the understanding of personal and collective healing as a journey of spiritual integration. We think the best relationships are forged when we are comfortable, relaxed and free of pressure. Preferring instead to think of the evening as a casual night out where one can truly be themselves. We do not use traditional 'speed dating' offerings such as bells, whistles and name-tags. Instead we focus on creating an atmosphere conducive to meeting others; a great venue, a personable host and a staff to assist.
Upon registration, you'll be sent an email inviting you to login to your mobile ‘Smart-Card’. As the event begins, log-in to your scorecard and let the flirting begin. You'll be able to choose whom you wish to meet again, to what degree you like them and have until midnight to submit your final selections for matching. Once the clock strikes midnight - return to our platform to see your matches. You can also access your profile via mobile, tablet or PC. Our platform isn't an app so it requires absolutely no downloading and can be accessed directly from our website, anytime.
Should you have any questions - feel free to ask away. Take the time before the event starts to settle in - have a beverage if you would like and mingle should you wish. Chat up our Hosts for tips or simply to ask, which direction the bar is in! After being shown to your table, the ladies will remain seated for the duration of the event. The gents move from lovely lady to lovely lady every six to seven minutes. Your mobile scorecard gives you the ability to see all the participants attending your event, upload your picture, make your selections and be notified of your matches all from your phone.
Don't fret about figuring out if the person is the one or the perfect person for you. Consider it the date before the date. If you choose someone and they chose you - it's a match. You will be given each others first name and email address. The rest is up to you.

Jeff Weiss presents 'Waiting for Britney Spears' | Third Place Books Ravenna
Jun 11, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
Third Place Books is pleased to welcome music writer and cultural critic Jeff Weiss to our Ravenna store for a conversation about his new book, Waiting for Britney Spears: A True Story, Allegedly. Speaking firsthand from Weiss's youthful experience as a tabloid reporter, the book tracks Britney's rise to it-girl status and subsequent fall from grace with both sardonic humor and genuine care. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! When you RSVP to one of our free events during the month of June, you can add a donation to TheQueerTransProject, a Black-led, trans-led nonprofit organization dedicated to providing life-changing gender-affirming resources, uplifting trans voices, and building power for our communities. Through their Build-a-Queer Kit program, QTP has distributed over $500,000 worth of free gender-affirming items to trans people in all 50 states. Their Flight Assistance Program has covered over 125,000 miles so far, ensuring that those seeking gender-affirming care can get there safely. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is recommended in advance. About Waiting for Britney Spears. . .America, 2003: A country at war, its shiny veneer beginning to crack. Von Dutch and The Simple Life dominate. And on the cover of every magazine, a twenty-one-year-old pop star named Britney Spears. Tracking her every move for a third-tier gossip rag in Los Angeles was an unknown young writer taking whatever job he could while pursuing his distant literary dreams. He'd instead become an eyewitness to the slow tragedy of a changing nation, represented in spirit by “the coy it-girl at the end of history.”
Years later, after finally establishing himself as a celebrated journalist, Jeff Weiss presents Waiting for Britney Spears, a gonzo, nostalgic, and “allegedly true” recounting of his years as a tabloid spy in the lurid underbelly of Los Angeles. Weiss follows America’s sweetheart through Vegas superclubs and Malibu car chases, annulled marriages and soul-crushing legal battles, all the way to Britney’s infamous 2007 VMA performance. As Weiss lives through the chaos leading to Britney’s conservatorship, he observes, with peerless style, cringe-inducing fashion waves, destructive celebrity surveillance, and a country whose decline is embodied by the devastating downturn of its former golden child.
With the narrative flair that established him as a singular chronicler of modern pop culture, Weiss goes for broke in Waiting for Britney Spears, a descent into a neon hall of mirrors reflecting our obsession with fame, morality, and the mystery of what really happened to the last great pop star. Jeff Weiss is a music writer and cultural critic whose work has appeared in the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, Pitchfork, FADER, and many other outlets. A former columnist for LA Weekly, he is the cofounder of The LAnd magazine and the founder of the pioneering hip-hop blog Passion of the Weiss, along with its record label, POW Recordings. He lives in Los Angeles. About Third Place BooksFounded in 1998 in Lake Forest Park, Washington, Third Place Books is dedicated to the creation of a community around books and the ideas inside them. Seaprog Presents: Moon Letters (album release) / Julie Slick / Kitsune | Substation
Jun 13, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
Seattle
Seaprog presents a night of prog and psychedelic rock at The Substation! Serving as a special kick-off event for the Cascadence Festival. Tickets for Saturday at RAC can be found at the Seaprog website.
Moon Letters likely needs no introduction to anyone who’s ever been interested in one of our events. They played on Day Zero of Seaprog 2017, and then on the main stage at the 2019 festival. Since then, they’ve also toured around North America, and they’ve got European dates coming up this summer. When it comes to progressive rock from Seattle, they are at the top, and their modern take on the classic style — not to mention their theatrical performance style — has won them fans around the world. With two acclaimed albums under their collective belt, this concert will celebrate the release for their third album,
This Dark Earth
. Even people who aren’t into prog rock have been won over by their musicianship and blend of fun and serious chops. Definitely not something you want to miss!

Julie Slick’s name has also appeared on our bills before, both with her band EchoTest (2019) and as a member of Troot (also 2019). Aside from that, she’s toured and collaborated with Adrian Belew, Crimson ProjeKct, Béla Fleck, Robert Fripp, Alice Cooper, and many more. On her own, she’s recorded a number of solo albums (three or more, depending on how you count) and has developed a captivating live solo set, augmenting her formidable bass skills with electronics and loops. The music blends experimental elements with accessible melodies, and has been known to feature adaptations of songs by King Crimson, EchoTest, and others, along with improvisations and storytelling.

Founded in 2016 by Kiyan Fox, Kitsune began as an exploration of planetary energies through guitar experiments in magical intervals. Over time, the project evolved, incorporating drums, butoh dancers, and a diverse array of instrumentalists from Seattle’s avant-garde and progressive music scene. The result is a sound that’s neo-classical, lush, and evocative — sometimes delicate and pretty, other times dark and bombastic. The current lineup consists of Alicia DeJoie (guitar, violin, vocals), Charlie Bowlen (electronics, percussion), Jeff Jackson (bass, Mellotron), Kiyan Fox (guitar, samples), Lyam White (vocals, saxophone), and Scott Adams (drums). They’re working on their first album, but their live shows around town have been gathering fans. We’re thrilled to be part of their journey, and feel confident that you will agree they’ve come up with a unique approach to making music.
