Brian Goldstone presents 'There Is No Place for Us' | Third Place Books Seward Park
Jun 5, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
Third Place Books welcomes journalist Brian Goldstone to our Seward Park store for a conversation about his groundbreaking book, There Is No Place for Us: Working and Homeless in America. He investigates the concerning uptick in housing insecurity for working people, following five Atlanta families as they fight to make ends meet. Goldstone is joined in conversation by Gregg Colburn, associate professor of real estate at the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments and the co-author of Homelessness is a Housing Problem: How Structural Factors Explain U.S. Patterns. This event is free and open to the public. For important updates, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! Having trouble registering? See Eventbrite's troubleshooting FAQ here. Tickets:This event is free to attend. Registration is required in advance. About There Is No Place For Us. . .NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEWEDITORS’ CHOICE • Through the “revelatory and gut-wrenching” (Associated Press) stories of five Atlanta families, this landmark work of journalism exposes a new and troubling trend—the dramatic rise of the working homeless in cities across America.
“An exceptional feat of reporting, full of an immediacy that calls to mind Adrian Nicole LeBlanc’sRandom Familyand Matthew Desmond’sEvicted.”—The New York Times Book Review
The working homeless. In a country where hard work and determination are supposed to lead to success, there is something scandalous about this phrase. But skyrocketing rents, low wages, and a lack of tenant rights have produced a startling phenomenon: People with full-time jobs cannot keep a roof over their head, especially in America’s booming cities, where rapid growth is leading to catastrophic displacement. These families are being forced into homelessness not by a failing economy but a thriving one.
In this gripping and deeply reported book, Brian Goldstone plunges readers into the lives of five Atlanta families struggling to remain housed in a gentrifying, increasingly unequal city. Maurice and Natalia make a fresh start in the country’s “Black Mecca” after being priced out of DC. Kara dreams of starting her own cleaning business while mopping floors at a public hospital. Britt scores a coveted housing voucher. Michelle is in school to become a social worker. Celeste toils at her warehouse job while undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer. Each of them aspires to provide a decent life for their children—and each of them, one by one, joins the ranks of the nation’s working homeless.
Through intimate, novelistic portraits, Goldstone reveals the human cost of this crisis, following parents and their kids as they go to sleep in cars, or in squalid extended-stay hotel rooms, and head out to their jobs and schools the next morning. These are the nation’s hidden homeless—omitted from official statistics, and proof that overflowing shelters and street encampments are only the most visible manifestation of a far more pervasive problem.
By turns heartbreaking and urgent, There Is No Place for Us illuminates the true magnitude, causes, and consequences of the new American homelessness—and shows that it won’t be solved until housing is treated as a fundamental human right. Brian Goldstone is a journalist whose longform reporting and essays have appeared in The New York Times, Harper’s Magazine, The New Republic, The California Sunday Magazine, and Jacobin, among other publications. He has a PhD in anthropology from Duke University and was a Mellon Research Fellow at Columbia University. In 2021, he was a National Fellow at New America. He lives in Atlanta with his family. Gregg Colburn is an associate professor of real estate at the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments. He publishes research on topics related to housing and homelessness and is co-author of the book Homelessness is a Housing Problem: How Structural Factors Explain U.S. Patterns. Gregg holds an MSW and PhD from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from Northwestern University. Prior to academia, he worked as an investment banker and private equity professional. Gregg is co-chair of the University of Washington’s Homelessness Research Initiative and is a member of the National Alliance to End Homelessness Research Council. LUKE SEVEREID and SCOTT LOSSE in Burien | Flight Path
Jun 6, 2025 (UTC-8)ENDED
Seattle
LUKE SEVEREID and SCOTT LOSSE are back in BURIEN Burien WA / Flight Path / June 6th & 7th a little about the comedians... LUKE SEVEREID is a hill-hiking, metal-music-loving, chrome-dome-having stand-up comedian from Seattle, WA. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest with the plaids and IPA-fueled husk to prove it, he has spent the last decade yelling jokes all over the US and Canada, and just got back from a Sold Out tour of Australia as a part of KNOTFEST LUKE’s comedic style has been described as insightfully idiotic, aggressively absurd, and most accurately, unmedicated ADHD in action. Besides looking identical to your favorite bouncer/bass player, Luke was also recently in the Big Sky Comedy Festival, a semifinalist in the Seattle and San Francisco International Comedy Competition, and a winner of Best Comedy Film at HUMP! Film Festival. Millions have enjoyed his stand-up videos online, and no matter who you are or where you’re from, he is GUARANTEED to get a giggle or two out of you. SCOTT LOSSE is a stand-up comedian and content creator from Burien, Washington. He has been featured on Dry Bar Comedy, Outside Magazine, and Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Scott has become well known for his short-form content and observational humor about the outdoors and living in the Pacific Northwest. His stand-up is absurd and relatable. People like it. His album Popular Donuts is now available on Spotify and his Dry Bar Special Okay in on YouTube and has a billion billion views. Early Bird $15 General Admission $20 VIP Booth $60 (comes with dedicated server and complimentary drinks) FAQ Q: What is this event? A: You know that thing you like to do called laughing? That's whats going to happen here. Professional Dopamine DEALERS will bring you joy and mirth and all kinds of other synonyms for serotonin fueled emotions ALSO known as a Stand UP Comedy Show Q: Are you funny? A: Depends on the day and who you are. I know on Saturdays around 8 PM I am HILARIOUS(lets not even talk about Tuesdays ok...) we've both been performing stand up for over12 years and regularly have people come to see me again ON PURPOSE. Check out a video and decide for yourself: https://youtu.be/Gn5pEc37DUs and https://youtu.be/LRV3u7Q_zYE?si=FZijcgv00VQZJAFv Q: Is this a Family Friendly Show? A: Depends how cool your family is. If you're sensitive to adult topics or language, this probably is not the show for you. If you're the type of person who leaves yelp reviews, maybe stay home and think about what you’re ultimately trying to get out of life. Again, google costs none money to use. Q: Is there a break? A: The show is continuous and runs about 90 minutes give or take. Q: Will drinks be available? A: Yes! Check out the venue's website for a menu! Q: Where is the venue? A: Oh boy... new to the internet? That's cool just click the venue's name above and it'll have an address there. Q: Where do I buy tickets? We'll shout you out at the show opening and if you pay enough, I'll stop the show every 5 minutes and tell everyone how amazing your product is. Q: Explain the ticket types? A: If there are early bird tickets, those are cheap, first come, first serve tickets for people on a budget or people without commitment issues. Some venues don't let me do it. Regular Bird(General Admission) is just a ticket to the show. but that doesn't mean it's not special. Can you put a price on a night of laughter and joy and probably sex(jokes)? VIP ticket will reserve you a ticket close to the front and I'll give you a free beer koozie at the show ($700 value!). This is basically a way of throwing me some extra cash because you feel like it. Plus you don't have to go scouring the internet to find it. This is a self produced comedy show, which means 100% of ticket sales go to the artists performing. Thank you for supporting live comedy Q: Can I talk to the comics after the show? A: Absolutely! Luke & Scott are planning on hanging around and trying to get you to give them money in exchange for shirts and trinkets and other commodities.

About
King County
Explorer Search and Rescue
:
King County Explorer Search and Rescue (Also known as KCESAR or ESAR )is the primary ground search and rescue resource in King County and the largest of nine member-units in the King County Search & Rescue Association. We are a volunteer organization operating under the purview of the King County Sheriff's Office and Washington State Department of Emergency Management. Our membership is comprised of outdoor enthusiasts with a passion for helping those in need.
ESAR specializes in wilderness search and rescue. All members are highly trained in wilderness navigation, survival skills, search method theory, and First Aid. The vast majority of our operations include searching for lost or injured hikers and climbers, stabilizing injuries, and evacuating them to the next level of care. Most operations are completed within a few hours of the 911 call, however depending on the circumstances of each mission they can span multiple days or even weeks.
About
Washington Trails Association
:
Washington Trails Association mobilizes hikers and everyone who loves the outdoors to explore, protect and champion trails and public lands.
We believe:
That exploring nature is good for people’s hearts, minds and bodies, and that hiking is a powerful way for everyone to connect with Washington’s natural wonders.
That people will protect the places they love to hike, from local parks to remote wilderness.
It is vitally important for everyone to have the opportunity to access the outdoors, and we are committed to reducing barriers to hiking trails and lands.
About
National Outdoor Leadership School
(NOLS)
NOLS is a nonprofit global wilderness school that believes in the transformative power of leadership through wilderness education.
They are dedicated to developing leaders by providing immersive experiences that challenge you to step beyond your comfort zone and unlock your full potential. Whether in remote backcountry settings or through courses near home, NOLS equips people with the skills, resilience, and confidence to lead in all walks of life.
About
REI
:
We don't just love and sell high-quality outdoor gear and apparel. We also design and develop our own:
REI Co-op
and
Co-op Cycles
. Our teams get outside with members in the dirt, wind and rain to put our designs to the test. That way our products work for you and can be passed down a generation—or two.
We put sustainability at the center of how we make products. In 2018, we debuted comprehensive
product sustainability standards
that apply to every brand we sell. Working closely with our partners at home and abroad allows us to make a larger impact across the outdoor industry. From seeking better ways of making goods, to advancing fair trade manufacturing practices, to putting our profits to good use, we advocate for the places we all love and make it easier for customers to shop their values.
About the
Kula Academy
:
Since the pandemic, the Kula Academy has hosted nearly 600 classes and events.
We’ve hiked sections of the PCT, summited volcanoes, paddled wild rivers, camped under starlit skies, painted, jumped into cold water for no good reason and danced —
A LOT!
Along the way, we’ve removed heaps of garbage from the Mountain Loop Highway, planted deciduous and evergreen trees, and taught people how to leave the world a better place.
It's a corner of the universe where adventure, creativity and stewardship collide!
Whether you’re here to master winter camping, learn “How Not to Die” doing the things you love, or simply because a pee cloth brought you our way, doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’re here!
And we’re glad that our paths have crossed.
We hope that you’ll join us on our adventures because you’re the missing ingredient in our trail mix.
Come ready to laugh, learn, and leave with new friends and hopefully a deeper connection to others, yourself, and the world around us.

classes here

Seattle
Sophisticated Simplicity
Our events offer a fresh alternative to speed dating and matchmaking. We don't find anything romantic about whistles, name-tags or over-the-top party trimmings typically found at singles events so we have done away with them. Creating an atmosphere that is at once casual and comfortable. It's what we call cheeky-chic!
Meet a partner to attend concerts, music festivals, bar crawls or fitness classes. Someone who shares your passions and interests - from sports to yoga - all in a setting just your speed.
-
Upon registration, you'll be sent an email inviting you to login to your mobile MyCheekyDate ‘Smart-Card’. As the event begins, login to your scorecard and let the flirting begin. You'll be able to choose whom you fancy meeting again, to what degree you like them and have until midnight to submit your final selections for matching. Once the clock strikes midnight - return to our platform to see your matches. It's where Cheeky meets convenience! You can also access your profile via mobile, tablet or PC. Our platform isn't an app so it requires absolutely no downloading and can be accessed directly from our website, anytime. Paper scorecards are just so 2010!
The night has arrived! Go to the venue at the published start time for the event. There is no official start time to the speed dating portion of the evening - we like to wait for all daters to arrive, to have a moment to settle in with a refreshment and mingle should they wish.
Our personable hosts will assist you with your MyCheekyDate 'Smart-Card’ Scorecard. Flirty and fun, your mobile scorecard is just the beginning. Chat up our Hosts for tips or simply to ask, which direction the bar is in! After being shown to your table, the ladies will remain seated for the duration of the event. The gents move from lovely lady to lovely lady every six to seven minutes. Your mobile scorecard gives you the ability to see all the participants attending your event, upload your picture, make your selections and be notified of your matches all from your phone.
Offering uncompromising value with unparalleled service. Lovely venues and our lovely Hosts to assist you with anything or anyone.
