An Evening with Jake Morris-Campbell - Between the Salt and the Ash | Booka

Mar 17, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED

Literary Arts
Join us for an evening with Jake Morris-Campbell, talking about his new book Between the Salt and the Ash: A Journey into the Soul of Northumbria. A writer's quest to understand the deep past and uncertain future of his homeland. After inheriting the miner's safety lamp that belonged to his great-grandfather, Jake Morris-Campbell sets out on a pilgrimage across his homeland. Travelling from the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to Durham Cathedral, he asks what new ways might be made through the old north. This region, a hub of early Christian Britain and later strongly defined by industry and class, now faces an uncertain future. But it remains a unique and starkly beautiful part of the country, with a deep history that is intimately entwined with the idea of Englishness. Jake’s journey along the ‘Camino of the North’ sees him explore the shifting nature of individual and regional identity across thirteen-hundred years of social change. At the same time, it challenges him to reconsider his own calling as a writer and how it relates to the lives of the people he meets along the way. Between the salt and the ash asks what stories the North East can tell about itself in the wake of Christianity and coal. Rejecting the damaging trope of ‘left behind’ communities, Jake uncovers neglected seams of culture and history, while offering a heartfelt celebration of the place he calls hyem. Event Format: Talk, followed by audience Q&A, meet and greet and book signing. Join us for an evening with Clare Leslie Hall as she talks about her highly anticipated new novel Broken Country, an epic love story that asks: what would you risk for a second chance at first love? Everyone in the village said nothing good would come of Gabriel's return. And as Beth looks at the man she loves on trial for murder, she can't help thinking they were right. Beth was seventeen when she first met Gabriel. Over that heady, intense summer, he made her think and feel and see differently. She thought it was the start of her great love story. When Gabriel left to become the person his mother expected him to be, she was broken. It was Frank who picked up the pieces and together they built a home very different from the one she'd imagined with Gabriel. Watching her husband and son, she remembered feeling so sure that, after everything, this was the life she was supposed to be leading. But when Gabriel comes back, all Beth's certainty about who she is and what she wants crumbles. Even after ten years, their connection is instant. She knows it's wrong and she knows people could get hurt. But how can she resist a second chance at first love? A love story with the pulse of a thriller, Broken Country is a heart-pounding novel of impossible choices and devastating consequences. Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and a book signing. Tickets: £10 (admits one, redeemable against signed copy of Broken Country) or £17.00 (admits one, includes signed copy of Broken Country) Venue: Booka Bookshop, 26-28 Church Street, Oswestry, Shropshire, SY11 2SP Please let us know if you have an accessibility/mobility requirements Refunds: It is our general policy not to refund event tickets unless an event has sold out. The Grapevine - An Evening with Kate Kemp | Booka

Apr 3, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oswestry

Literary Arts
Join us for an evening with Kate Kemp as she talks about her stand-out debut novel The Grapevine, a gripping and atmospheric murder mystery that exposes the secrets behind closed doors in 1970’s suburban Australia. Australia, 1979. It's the height of summer and on a quiet suburban cul-de-sac a housewife is scrubbing the yellow and white chequered tiles of her bathroom floor. But all is not as it seems. For one thing, it's 3 a.m. For another, she is trying desperately to remove all traces of blood before they stain. Her husband seems remarkably calm, considering their neighbour has just been murdered. As the sun rises on Warrah Place, news of Antonio Marietti's death spreads like wildfire, gossip is exchanged in whispers and suspicion mounts. Twelve-year-old Tammy launches her own investigation, determined to find out what happened, but she is not the only one whose well-meaning efforts uncover more mysteries than they solve. There are secrets behind every closed door in the neighbourhood - and the identity of the murderer is only one of them . . . Richly atmospheric and simmering with tension, The Grapevine is an acutely observed debut novel about prejudice and suspicion, the hidden lives of women, and how the ties that bind a community can also threaten to break it. Kate Kemp won the Stylist Prize for feminist fiction in 2021 and is definitely an author to watch. If you're looking for your next page turning read then this is an event for you! Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and book signing Tickets: £10 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of The Grapevine) or £19 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of The Grapevine). John & Paul - An Evening with Ian Leslie | Booka

Apr 9, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED

Literary Arts
Join us for an evening with Ian Leslie as he talks about his new biography John and Paul, the story of the love and jealousy of two young geniuses who merged and multiplied their talents to produce one of the greatest bodies of music in history. John & Paul begins in 1957, when two teenagers in suburban Liverpool meet and decide to play rock n'roll together. It ends twenty-three years later, when one of them is murdered. In between, we see them become global stars, create countless indelible songs, and play a central role in creating the modern world. Lennon and McCartney were more than friends, rivals or collaborators. They were intimates who both had the fabric of their world ruptured at a young age, and who longed to make emotional connections; with each other, and with audiences. The pop song was a vessel into which they poured feelings of grief and euphoria and everything in between. When they couldn't speak what they felt, they sang it. After the break-up of their group, they maintained a musical dialogue at a distance, in songs full of recrimination, regret, and affection. Ian Leslie traces the twists and turns of their relationship through the music it produced and offers rich insights into the nature of creativity, collaboration and human connection. Drawing on recently released footage and recordings, this is a startlingly fresh take on two of the greatest icons in music history. Leslie's majestic and wildly enjoyable biography will make us see and hear Lennon and McCartney anew. Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and book signing Tickets: £10 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of John and Paul) or £25 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of John and Paul). Our Oaken Bones - An Evening with Merlin Hanbury-Tenison | Booka

Literary Arts
Join us for an evening with Merlin Hanbury-Tenison as he talks about his new memoir Our Oaken Bones, a story of renewal, reviving a family, a farm and Britain's Ancient Rainforests. I lie on the rock to let my limbs dry after my immersion in the river. My bones warm. I have no towel but the moss is grateful for the additional moisture that I bring as the water runs off me and into its spongy web of roots and branches. I look up through the canopy and time freezes as the oak leaves drift gently backwards and forwards, dappling the light as it falls onto my body. I am home. Reeling from the pain of devastating miscarriages and suffering from PTSD after military adventures in Afghanistan, Merlin and his wife Lizzie decide to leave the bustle of London and return to Merlin’s childhood home, a Cornish hill farm called Cabilla in the heart of Bodmin Moor. There, they are met by unexpected challenges: a farm slipping ever further into debt, the discovery that the overgrazed and damaged woods running throughout the valley are in fact one of the UK’s last remaining fragments of Atlantic temperate rainforest, and the sudden and near catastrophic strickening by Covid of Merlin’s father, the explorer Robin. As they fall more in love with the rainforest that Merlin had adventured in as a child, so begins a fight to save not only themselves and their farm, but also one of the world’s most endangered habitats. Our Oaken Bones is an honest and intimate true story about renewal, the astonishing healing power of nature, and our duty to heal it in return. Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and book signing Tickets: £10 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of Our Oaken Bones) or £22 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of Our Oaken Bones). Live a complete life on your own terms - join us for an evening with journalist, writer and public speaker Nicola Slawson as she talks about her new book Single. Around 40 per cent of UK adults are single at any one time. Far from being a transitional state between relationships, singledom can offer freedom, self-discovery and self-determination. At the same time, there are challenges, from social to economic. How do you handle being ill if you are alone? Who do you call if you're stranded out late at night? If you don't find the right person to have a baby with, should you become a parent alone? In Single, Nicola explores being un-partnered in a world designed for couples, and how to find the joy in the life that you are already living. If you are newly single, long-term single, avowedly single, reluctantly so, considering leaving your current relationship or just wondering what to say to your aunt next time she asks if you'll ever get married - this book is for you. Nicola Slawson has written a warm, joyful book full of solidarity with lots of new ways of looking at single life. Having chosen it as our non-fiction Book of the Month for February, we look forward to welcoming her to Booka. Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and book signing Tickets: £10 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of Single) or £17 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of Single). Join Lucy Easthope, the UK's top emergency planner, as she talks about her new book Come What May and shares life-changing lessons on recovery learnt through a life working in disaster. We all know that at some point in life, we will experience pain, uncertainty and loss. Widowhood, redundancy, a life-changing diagnosis, pregnancy loss, or a global pandemic. So how can we weather the storms, and cope with whatever comes next? No one can answer this better than Lucy Easthope, an emergency planner whose job is to support survivors of major disasters. She has been there after countless earthquakes, fires and floods. Time and again she has watched how people rebuild: the work, the pitfalls and the fragile joy. In Come What May, she distils for us what she has learned about how to carry on during and after terrible times. Through poignant stories and hard-won wisdom, she offers a roadmap for resilience in the face of adversity. She explains what shape the recovery journey might take, how to triage your life in an emergency, how to plan for 'the slump' (also known as the lasagne phase), how to take stock of what has happened to you, how to watch out for 'learned helplessness', and what good (and bad) help looks like. This is a book for all of us existing in 'the after' who want not just to survive, but to live and unleash strengths we never knew we had. Lucy's first book When the Dust Settles was a Sunday Times bestseller and a Radio Four Book of the Week. We look forward to welcoming her back to Booka to celebrate the publication of Come What May. Journey to the heart of pro cycling as Booka Bookshop, in collaboration with Adrenaline Sporting Events, present an evening with Team Sky and Ineos Grenadiers legend, Luke Rowe, talking about his new memoir Road Captain and life at the heart of the peleton. There’s one well-established truth in professional cycling: the strongest always wins. Yet in a sport of champions, victory is only possible as a team. At the heart of that team effort, that unity, is the road captain. After more than a decade as the pre-eminent road captain in professional bike racing, Luke Rowe reveals here for the first time the intricacies of that role. As he lifts the lid, he provides the ultimate insider’s view on racing tactics and strategy within the professional peloton. He gives readers an unprecedented insight into what exactly is going on within that pulsing mass of athletic power and state-of-the-art machinery, seen through the eyes of the rider tasked with leading his team to glory. Featuring exhilarating stories from his years at Team Sky and Ineos Grenadiers – where he played a fundamental role in the team’s dominance at the Tour de France, leading Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas and Egan Bernal to their Tour victories – Luke shows what it’s like to manage a road race unfolding at 60km/h. As he points out, it is ‘like playing chess on wheels’. Road Captain immerses readers in the team dynamics, tactical complexities and split-second decisions vital to success in professional cycling. It discloses the mental and physical battles taking place within a group of riders, and reveals how the biggest bike races are won. We are delighted to be hosting this event in collaboration with Adrenaline Sporting Events and look forward to welcoming Luke Rowe to Oswestry on publication day. Don't miss this opportunity to see and meet him! An Evening with Eowyn Ivey - Black Woods, Blue Sky | Booka

Literary Arts
Join us for an evening with Eowyn Ivey, author of the million copy bestseller The Snow Child, as she talks about her new novel Black Woods, Blue Sky, a novel about the beauty and terror of the Alaskan wilderness, the love between a mother and a daughter, and what it means to face down our fears and survive them. Birdie's keeping it together, of course she is. So she's a little hungover on her shifts, and has to bring her daughter to the lodge while she waits never tables, but it's a tough town to be a single mother, and Birdie just needs to get by. And then Birdie meets Arthur, who is quieter than most men, but makes her want to listen; who is gentle with Emaleen, and understands Birdie's fascination with the mountains in whose shadow they live. When Arthur asks Birdie and Emaleen to leave the lodge and make a home, just the three of them, in his off-grid cabin, Birdie's answer, in a heartbeat, is yes. Out in the wilderness Birdie's days are harsher and richer than she ever imagined possible. Here she, and Emaleen, will learn the whole, fearful truth about Arthur. Black Woods, Blue Sky is a daring reimagining of the legend of Beauty and the Beast, that asks the question: can love save us from ourselves? Having made Black Woods, Blue Sky our Book of the Month for February 2025, we're delighted to welcome Eowyn back to Booka when she vists the UK this June. Event Format: Author talk 'in conversation' followed by audience Q&A and book signing Tickets: £10 without book (Admits One, ticket redeemable against a signed copy of Black Woods, Blue Sky) or £20 with book (Admits One, includes a signed copy of Black Woods, Blue Sky).
