After her father's death, she and her mother moved to Blackrock. In 1915, she joined the Volunteer Aid Detachment, serving with the Almeric Paget Massage Corps. Letts was a war poet whose work originally covered lyric poetry exploring Irish folk themes popularised by the Celtic Revival. In the 1950s, moved to Killiney. She died on the 7th June 1972 and is buried in Rathcoole. A memorial plaque celebrating her life and work was unveiled in Rathcoole by President Michael D. Higgins on 20 June 2022. Bairbre O’Hogan, along with local historian Mervyn Ennis, originally brought Letts’s legacy and local links to the attention of South Dublin Libraries in 2021. This led to collaborations on an exhibition about WM Letts’s life, and a symposium celebrating her work. South Dublin Libraries is delighted to publish this book, which aims to add to the recorded history of South Dublin County, and keep Letts’s work alive for future generations. Bairbre O’Hogan was born and bred in Dublin. She completed her BA in Celtic Studies and an MA in Early Irish Literature and Language before becoming a Teacher of Irish, Celtic Studies and Tourism in Dominican College, Sion Hill. Literary Arts
Gutter Bookshop are delighted to welcome author Alan Hollinghurst, the Booker Prize-winning author of The Line of Beauty, as he discusses his new book Our Evenings with Donald Clarke. Our Evenings is a dark, luminous and wickedly funny portrait of modern England through the lens of one man's acutely observed and often unnerving experience. It is a story of race and class, theatre and sexuality, love and the cruel shock of violence, from one of the finest writers of our age. Centered around the lives of two boys - Dave Win, as the recipient of a scholarship at his local boarding school and Giles, wealthy son of his sponsors. Encountering each other for the first time at aged 13 during a weekend visit to their home, Dave is exposed to Giles' envy and violence. As their lives unfold over the next half a century, the two boys' careers will diverge dramatically: Dave, a gifted actor struggling with convention and discrimination, Giles an increasingly powerful and dangerous politician. Our Evenings is Dave Win's own account of his life as a schoolboy and student, his first love affairs and career, and a late-life affair, which transforms his sixties with a new sense of happiness and a perilous security. Lauded as one of his finest novels to date, don’t miss this opportunity to hear Alan and journalist Donald Clarke explore the topics of the book in a live interview in the wonderful setting of Dublin’s Unitarian Church. Donald Clarke is the chief film correspondent, a feature writer and a regular columnist for The Irish Times. He is also a frequent contributor to RTÉ radio shows such as Arena and the Brendan O’Connor Show. Information Source: The Gutter Bookshop, Temple Bar | eventbrite
