“ Dōbutsu No Kamen ” zhǎn lǎn 9 / 5,000 "Animal Masks" Exhibition | Tokyo National Museum

Aug 26–Nov 9, 2025 (UTC+9)
Tokyo
Exhibitions
During the Asuka period, Gigaku, a Buddhist performing art, was introduced from the continent to Japan. Since then, various performing arts using masks have flourished in Japan, such as Bugaku, which developed as a masked drama at the imperial court, and Noh and Kyogen, which were perfected during the Muromachi period. Basically, masks depict people, but a wide variety of masks, including gods and demons, are used and their shapes are also diverse. Among them, the most eye-catching are the animal masks. In this special feature, we will be displaying animal-themed masks across the boundaries of performing arts. There are masks that do not seem to be animals at first glance, such as Kyogen masks of monkeys and foxes that depict animal faces in a realistic way that is easy to understand even today, Bugaku masks of the Kunlun Hassen, which anthropomorphize birds, Noh masks of lions, and lion mouths that are quite human-like in appearance, as well as Usobuki, which puts a rolled up paper into a cylindrical shape in its pursed mouth to make it look like a mosquito, and Kentoku, whose humorous facial expression is likened to that of an animal spirit. People may have enjoyed playing animals and felt a sense of familiarity with the animals that appeared in performing arts. We hope that you will experience the way people look at animals through the diverse expressions of animal masks.
