We open the Mandurah Readers & Writers festival this year, with Stephen Daisley, winner of the 2024 Premier’s Book of the Year award for his novel A Better Place. Stephen will discuss his novel in conversation with Kathy Heys. The Readers’ and Writers’ Festival is an annual adult literature event presented by City of Mandurah Library & Heritage Services. In 2025 it will be held from 16 – 18 January at the Seashells Resort Mandurah. The aim of the festival is to foster a love of reading and literature and encourage creativity in our community. This year the festival brings together an array of established and emerging storytellers from across WA. The free to attend three-day festival includes author talks and panel discussions. Stephen Daisley Stephen Daisley was born in 1955 and grew up on the North Island of New Zealand. He has worked on sheep and cattle stations, on oil and gas construction sites and as a truck driver, among many other jobs. His first novel, Traitor, won the 2011 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Fiction. Coming Rain won the Ockham Prize in 2015. Stephen’s novel A Better Place was awarded Book of the Year in West Australian Premier’s Book Award for 2024. Stephen lives in Western Australia. Join Lucas Jordan In Conversation with Nicholas Reynolds as they discuss Nicholas Reynolds' book, The Chipilly Six. This insightful event is part of the annual Readers' and Writers' Festival presented by City of Mandurah Library & Heritage Services. Taking place from January 11 to 13, 2024, at the beautiful Seashells Resort Mandurah, this festival aims to nurture a passion for reading and literature while fostering creativity in the community. The festival lineup includes established and emerging storytellers from Western Australia, coming together to share their expertise and experiences. Lucas Jordan, an author himself, grew up in Burekup, Western Australia, and holds a PhD in history from the Australian National University. He is currently a leading teacher at Western English Language School in Melbourne. Lucas is the author of The Chipilly Six: Unsung heroes of the Great War (2023) and Stealth Raiders: A few daring men in 1918 (2017). Drawing from extensive research, Lucas tells the captivating story of the Chipilly Six, a group of Australian soldiers whose heroic acts during the Great War have been overlooked by history. This book sheds light on their personal experiences, from their return home to their lives in the midst of a pandemic, the Great Depression, and another world war. It also explores the origins of the Anzac dawn service. Join Nicholas Reynolds in an engaging conversation about his book and his expertise in British Colonial history. Nicholas obtained a Bachelor of Arts from the University of WA and holds a Certificate in Museum Studies from Edith Cowan University. With his experience as the Curator of the Mandurah Museum, Nicholas brings a wealth of knowledge to this event.
