William Klein's MR. FREEDOM (1968) - A Savage Pop Art Satire! | Philosophical Research Society
Jul 19, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
As part of their July series "US Tour," 7th House is proud to present
William Klein
's brazen and bonkers pop art 60s satire
MR. FREEDOM
(1968)! Indefatigably irreverent, eye-poppingly colorful, and surrealistically silly, this underseen oddity is
an eagle-eyed, no-holds-barrred takedown of American imperialism and jingoistic nationalism like none other!
1968: As the war in Vietnam reached its peak with the most US troop deployments and casualties since the conflict began, American expatriate fashion photographer turned filmmaker William Klein (who never returned home after being stationed in France in WWII) cast his brilliant and incisive eye on the Made in the U.S. brand of toxic Manifest Destiny machismo he saw as a threat to everyone, world over. Combining the sardonic absurdity of the mod fashion mockumentary he's perhaps best known for –
WHO ARE YOU, POLLY MAGOO?
(1966)
–
and the radical political fervor of his pro North Vietnamese Army collaboration (with Godard, Varda, Marker, Resnais and more)
FAR FROM VIETNAM
(1967), Klein unleashed his hilarious, vicious lampoon of imperialist American foreign policy:
Mr. Freedom (
John Abbey
), a bellowing good-ol'-boy superhero decked out in copious football padding, jets to France to cut off a Commie invasion from Switzerland. A destructive, arrogant patriot in tight pants, Freedom joins forces with Marie Madeleine (a satirically sexy
Delphine Seyrig
) to combat lefty freethinkers, as well as the insidious evildoers Moujik Man and inflatable Red China Man, culminating in a star-spangled showdown of kitschy excess. Delightfully crass, is a trenchant, rib-tickling takedown of gaudy modern Americana.
Featuring cameos from
Donald Pleasance, Serge Gainsbourg
and more,
MR. FREEDOM
is a one-of-a-kind, bold, bright, brash, and bizarre sendup that is, alas and frightneningly, just as relevant today as it was nearly 60 years ago.
Dir. William Klein, 1968, 92 mins, France, English, Unrated (Adult Audiences Only), Digital.
Special thanks to Brian Belavorac of Janus Films.
Tickets: $12 (In Person Event Only)

From canine sports to exotic animals, to some of the biggest musicians in the world – Anabel’s work doesn’t fall into any specific niche. She believes there are no limits to what you can create, and to photograph everything that gives you that spark of inspiration. Deliquesce-Flux Photography began as a canine portrait service, servicing pet owners in the Los Angeles area at local dog parks and community events. She then swiftly moved into the marvelous world of dog sport photography, going on to currently receive a position photographing for three agility clubs, one scent sport club, and one barn hunt organization. However, throughout her career, she has worked with two dock diving clubs, one herding organization, six agility clubs, one flyball club, and two disc dog clubs. Her work has been featured and used by the American Kennel Club and the United States Dog Agility Association. Anabel has had the honor of photographing both national and international canine champions, as well as their litters. To help in her ability to work so well with dogs, Anabel has taken up agility classes and taken seminars on body language. Anabel DFlux loves to give back to the community, and can frequently be seen donating photography sessions and creating visual content for organizations such as CLEAR Canine Cancer & Lymphoma, East Valley Animal Shelter, Adopt the Arts Foundation, multiple wolf conservation centers, and the Judith A Bassett Canine Conservation & Education Center.
