Boyle Heights Heritage Walking Tour | Mariachi Plaza, at the kiosko
Jul 13, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
On this walking tour we will be exploring the history of early Boyle Heights. We will tell the story of this special community, stretching from the Indigenous and Spanish eras, to the Mexican and early-American periods, and to the present. We will delve into the early history of the area to reveal the deep multi-cultural roots which have been laid here in this historical immigrant neighborhood.
This tour will start from Mariachi Plaza and walk around the historic-core of early Boyle Heights. Here are a few of the fascinating sites that we be taking a look at together:
The Cummings Block
(aka “
The Hotel Mariachi
”) - here we will discuss the early Californio history of the are known as
El Paredon Blanco
, on land first granted to the López family in the Mexican-era. We will here talk about the grand Queen Anne style which graces this site, built in 1889 by George Cummings and his Maria del Sacramento López. Here will talk about the various grand styles of architecture found in these oldest tracts of Boyle Heights.
The Gless House
– The are we will touch on the story of the foundering fathers of the neighborhood;
Andrew Boyle, William H. Workman
. We will also discuss the
French Basque
history of this area, as well as begin to tell the early
Jewish history
of the neighborhood.
Hollenbeck Park
– Once considered one of the most fashionable parks in Los Angeles the late-1800s, here we discuss how this park attracted people to the newly budding residential community.
Santa Fe Railroad Hospital (Linda Vista)
– the railroads brought people streaming to Los Angeles as new residents, as also attracted laborers to work for the railways which made their terminus nearby. We will discuss the role the railroads played in the growth of modern Los Angeles.
Hollenbeck Home for the Aged (The Palms)
– we quickly will swing by the site of the old Hollenbeck estate, which Elizabeth Hollenbeck transformed into a retirement and nursing home.
Jewish Home for the Aged
– we will also discuss how the Workman estate became the site of the Jewish senior home and convalescent hospital. We will talk about the important role this site has played in the lives immigrant Jewish seniors, and that which it now plays in the lives of immigrant Japanese seniors and their families in the present-day, the
Japanese Home
known as the
Keiro Retirement Home
.
The Jewish Orphans Home
- we will see the site which once served as a temporary home for Jewish orphans. Though this building also has a dark story to tell as well, of when it was used as a clinic by a quack doctor. It later became a boarding house, and today remains as one of the most interesting residential buildings in the neighborhood.
The Jewish Wayfarers Home
– the former location of the Hebrew sheltering home and asylum for homeless Jewish refugees. We will discuss how this site became associated with “hachnasat orchim,” the Jewish obligation to welcome and provide for the strangers in our midst.
The International Institute
– here will will discuss the multicultural programming of old Boyle Heights. And also touch on the important role this building played for the last century in helping immigrants – especially Japanese women – integrate into new lives here in Los Angeles. Throughout the years the institute has helped hundreds of thousands of immigrants and other low-income people overcome the barriers they face in becoming contributing members of society.
T
he Max Factor House
- Built in 1909, this
Craftsman
home on Boyle Avenue rose to fame in the 1920s when internationally renowned businessman Max Factor of settled there with his family, in close proximity to his store on South Central Avenue and the local Jewish community on the eastside. We will learn how his cosmetics, which he first developed here out of his garage, quickly became a favorite among Hollywood studios and celebrities.
We will then will head back to
Mariachi Plaza
, where will we will bring the story to the present and talk about the role this site has plays in the local musical and cultural heritage of this most important Mexican American community.
This is an essential tour to learn about the foundational history of Boyle Heights. It is also a great opportunity to learn about the changing landscape of Boyle Heights, and to discuss our current challenges to preserving these sites and the character of this historic community.
We will be meeting at
Mariachi Plaza
–
1817 E 1st Street, Los Angeles 90033
, near the corner of Boyle Ave – congregating at the steps of the gazebo-like kiosko at 11:45am, to start our tour promptly at noon. Note: location of meeting is subject to change in the case of a special event in the plaza; our meeting location will be confirmed prior to our event by email.
The walking tour is expected to last about 3-hours. We will be returning to Mariachi Plaza at the end of our tour.
After our tour I would encourage our guests to stay and mingle with me for a while, and maybe enjoy some great Mexican American food and drinks from one of our finest local establishments. You are also welcome to visit on museum and see our historical exhibit which has many historical documents related to this history.
Children 13 and under are free, please contact me to add them to my guest list. For current Boyle Heights residents, educators, and community activists, I will be offering a few spots on my guest list once again; please contact me at shmuel.gonzales@outlook.com, as spaces are limited.

"Awake and Narcoleptic" is a show that combines characters, stand-up, and storytelling to delve into not only narcolepsy, but everything anyone with an invisible disability goes through from misdiagnosis, medication side-effects, misconceptions, and of course, falling asleep at the worst moments.
"Awake and Narcoleptic" is a one-woman show that offers a raw, funny, and poignant look at the life of comedian Sarah Albritton, who is living with narcolepsy. Developed and directed by Josh Sobel of FutureHome Productions, this show explores the challenges that come with living with a misunderstood and often stigmatized disability, including the frustration of seeking a proper diagnosis and the side effects of medication.
Through personal anecdotes, "up-and-comer to watch and admire" (Alex James, Lost in Theatreland) Sarah shares her journey of self-discovery and acceptance, including the ups and downs of coming to terms with her condition and the impact it has had on her relationships and daily life. Along the way, she uses her "whip-smart humor" (Diep Tran, Playbill) to bring light to the realities of living with narcolepsy, from falling asleep during important meetings to experiencing vivid and sometimes terrifying hypnagogic hallucinations.
Yet, "Awake and Narcoleptic" is much more than just a collection of funny stories. It is a call to action, a "tour de force" (Lost In Theatreland) shedding light on the misconceptions surrounding invisible disabilities and the stigma that often comes with them. Through her story, Sarah hopes to inspire greater understanding and acceptance of those living with disabilities and to encourage people to speak up and share their own experiences. With a mix of humor, honesty, and heart, this Edinburgh Fringe Playbill Pick "is constructed and told so well that it would be at home on a Netflix special or in a larger theatre" (Playbill), and promises to "educate, entertain, and enlighten all at once"(Lost in Theatreland).

Wayne Wang's CHAN IS MISSING (1982)- A Landmark Classic of American Cinema! | Philosophical Research Society
Jul 13, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
“Not just a ground-breaking film, but also a witty, intelligent, mischievous attempt to mix identity politics (of an inquisitive, skeptical sort), social documentary, and genre parody. Thirty-four years on, it still looks brazenly inventive and bracingly fresh.”
- Jonathan Romney, Film Comment
“A small, whimsical treasure of a film….warm, low-key, affectionate and funny.”
- Roger Ebert
As part of their July series "US Tour," 7th House is proud to present a film as endearing and inventive as it was unassumingly groundbreaking,
Wayne Wang
’s Chinese American meta-noir
CHAN IS MISSING
(1982)!
A mystery man, a murder, and a wad of missing cash—in his wryly offbeat breakthrough, Wayne Wang updates the ingredients of classic film noir for the streets of contemporary San Francisco’s Chinatown. When their business partner (the titular Chan) disappears with the money they had planned to use for a cab license, driver Jo (Wood Moy) and his nephew Steve (Marc Hayashi) scour the city’s back alleys, waterfronts, and Chinese restaurants to track him down. But
what begins as a search for a missing man gradually turns into a far deeper and more elusive investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Chinese American identity.
The first feature by an Asian American filmmaker to play widely and get mainstream critical appreciation
,
Chan Is Missing
is a continuously fresh and surprising landmark of indie invention that playfully flips decades of cinematic stereotypes on their heads.
Dir. Wayne Wang, 1982, 75 mins, United States, English, Cantonese, and Mandarin with English subtitles, Unrated, Digital.
Special thanks to Strand Releasing.

A Dating Event For People Who Are Tired Of Dating
Dating Is Hard. We Want to Change That.
We’re eliminating online matches you never meet in person, dead-end first dates, and boring small talk.
If you want to make real connections, this is the event for you.
How it Works:

you
associate with.
Check your confirmation email for a link to set up your speed dating account. On this account, you will answer a few simple questions to ensure we find you the most compatible people in the room.

Our goal is to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all attendees, and we hope that everyone will approach this event with an open heart and an open mind.
It is important to note that we do not discriminate based on age or sex, and all attendees are welcome at this event.

Emotionally Available Improv | The Pack Theater
Jul 15, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
Imagine this: smooth, soft jazz plays in the background. It's instrumental, obviously. Smoke rises from a freshly lit candle. Lemongrass, Sage, Orange, Geranium stroll into your nostrils as you snuggle into your favorite robe and pour yourself some red wine. It's a perfect merlot. You settle into your new couch, eager to dish about your past relationships. You hear an awkward clearing of the throat from across the room and spy three strangers sitting across from you on your chaise. They want to perform...improv? The fuck? You talk to them about your past relationships, they ask you questions and perform a set inspired by your tale -- It's a rush! They cut in and out of stories, weaving an intricate web of love and drama and silly string -- all coming from you. You finish your wine, snuff out the crackling flame of the candle, and head to bed. Laying nestled under your weighted blanket, 10lbs for optimum mobility, you begin to smile, chuckle even. You feel energized, comforted even. You experience sensations of relief and humor and an unburdening of a weight not felt since what feels like eons ago. You experienced Emotionally Available.

Topic One:
Cybersecurity in the Age of AI: Navigating Unseen Threats
Now more than ever, cybersecurity is paramount for protecting sensitive data from breaches and attacks. The integration of AI in business processes brings both efficiency and new cybersecurity challenges. This presentation explores the dual nature of AI as both a business asset and a potential threat. It highlights how AI enhances productivity, transforms customer service, and enables predictive analytics, while also posing risks such as data privacy concerns and the potential for malicious use.
The presentation will delve into AI's role in cybersecurity, including its ability to detect threats and respond to breaches in real time. It also addresses the darker side of AI, such as its weaponization by cybercriminals, enhanced attack capabilities, and the challenges in detecting AI-driven threats like data poisoning, AI-enabled malware, and sophisticated social engineering attacks. Real-world examples illustrate the significant impact of these threats on businesses.
We'll discuss how to mitigate AI risks, discuss future trends, emphasize the need for businesses to adapt to new AI threats and opportunities, and the role of predictive analytics in future defenses.

he Routing Security Crystal Ball: RPKI Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

Recent U.S. government initiatives have prioritized the creation of RPKI Route Origin Authorizations (ROAs) to bolster network security. Finally, we’ll look ahead into the future of RPKI, examining upcoming developments and long-term plans being discussed within standards bodies and the broader Internet community.

About the Book:
A sharp, poignant story of a woman trying to rise from family pressure and grief to make it as a Broadway star, from a striking new voice.
After her sister Nena's sudden death, Xiomara, an Afro-Latina singer and actress born and raised in Washington Heights, is numb. With her sister gone, Xiomara is painfully close to thirty, living in a tiny apartment with her ultra-Catholic Puerto Rican mother, and having the same shitty sex with the same shitty men that she's been entertaining for years. Behind on rent despite two minimum-wage jobs, one of which involves singing show tunes while serving pancakes to tourists at Ellen's Stardust Diner, Xiomara is bitingly cynical, especially in her grief, and barely treading water.
But when a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to audition for Manny Santos, the most charismatic director of the moment, falls into her lap, it seems to Xiomara like a second chance to pursue the dream she thought she'd left behind has finally come. Meanwhile, something about Santi, a new coworker at the print shop where she spends half of her days photocopying other performers' headshots, starts to tug at the threads of her apathy. Nothing is simple, and soon Xiomara finds herself interacting with the ugliest sides of the industry and the powerful men that control it. While Xiomara grapples with the hard truth that sometimes the closer you are to your dreams, the further away from yourself you become, she is forced to ask herself if she has what it takes to build a new shiny life without losing the truth of her old one.
With hopeful spirit and unapologetic energy,
My Train Leaves at Three
asks big questions about grief, shame, sexuality, family, and love. This is a coming-of-age story about the balancing act between moving on and moving forward.

Experiencing the Higher Realms with Michael Hayes & Alisha Das Hayes | Peace Awareness Labyrinth
Jul 19, 2025 (UTC-7)ENDED
City of Los Angeles
What lies beyond the Soul Realm?
How can we know what cannot be mentally grasped—only spiritually remembered?
To speak of the realms beyond the Soul is to step into a sacred paradox. These levels of existence are beyond memory, beyond mind, and beyond words. And yet, you can know them—
Not through thought, but through direct spiritual experience.
Not through belief, but through inner awakening.
Though we may not always be aware of it, our truest nature is already anchored in these transcendent levels, even as we live and move through this world. There is a divine current—a loving force of God—that flows from beyond all planes into every level of creation. It carries perfect remembrance and offers that truth to each of us.
The master who supported us in awakening to this reality called this presence the Mystical Traveler Consciousness.
Saturday, July 19, 2025 we invite you to join us for a profoundly experiential and mystical workshop designed to help you directly access this deeper truth.
What’s Included:
Clearing of blocks, egoic distraction and fear from experiencing levels above soul
Collective energy and intention for direct experience of realms beyond the Soul
Video excerpts from John-Roger offering esoteric insights into the higher realms
A mystical talk with Michael and Alisha to explore and illuminate these esoteric teachings
A deeply immersive guided meditation to experience the higher realms
Inspiration and motivation to deepen your spiritual exercises and renew your spiritual commitment
A brief but powerful inner exercise
Mystical Q&A — including opportunities to ask personal questions about how you can experience these realms and integrate that awareness into daily life
A loving and joyful, community, both in person and online
A nourishing snack is provided
This will be our last MSIA workshop for now, and we are joyfully donating 100% of the proceeds in gratitude for all that MSIA has given.
This gathering is not about belief—it’s about knowing. A knowing that transcends thought. A remembrance that rises from within.
If your heart is stirred, we welcome you to join us in this sacred space of loving, light, and awakening.
With love and presence,
Alisha and Michael
