Join us for a screening of the music documentary Sidelining the Sidemen (and Women), followed by a Q&A with director William Roper, at the Edendale Library on Thursday, October 10th at 6:00 p.m.. Roper’s film examines the history of racial discrimination in the Los Angeles movie soundtrack industry. The video focuses on studio musicians in the last two decades of the 20th century. Four African American musicians (Susan Chatman, Joseph Mitchell, Robin Ross and Nolan Shaheed) relate their stories of creating careers in the highly competitive and cutthroat environment of the Hollywood scoring stage. Elder musician Bobby Bradford relates anecdotes of Los Angeles at the time that the Negro and white musicians’ unions amalgamated into the single AFM Musicians Local 47. William Roper is a multidisciplinary artist who plays tuba and other instruments, in musical environments from orchestras to small free improvising ensembles. He has toured the world as both a soloist and an ensemble player, and has been featured on over 60 recordings.
