Zulu Surf Hotel Tamarindo
4.1/557 Reviews
I don't know where to begin, this place was amazing to me. I have travelled a lot, but never solo in a place where I'm not a fluent speaker and don't know a soul - I stayed here solo for 10 days in the Playa Negra room, and from the moment I checked in I felt so safe, secure, and well cared for. The room was spacious and incredibly clean, the halls and common spaces also so secure and maintained. The staff were so gentle and accommodating, helping me with anything that came up, including things like booking tours, where to go to shop or to change money, how to get to the beach quickly, etc! I was so anxious to take on this trip by myself, but the staff and vibe is why I know I'll return to Tamarindo soon. I felt I have made friends due to the real human sincerity that I was shown. I was even given a yoga mat and block for my room when the receptionist learned I was practicing yoga in my room on the floor; By the way, there are free activities every few nights in the hotel and the Mercadito beside it, such as yoga classes, salsa classes, cocktail making classes, so you will always have something to do even if you don't go on tours and are on a budget! The Sol Bakery and Mercadito beside the hotel offer so much variety of food and beverage, and within Zulu there are two lounge areas as well for when the rain hits, so you will have plenty of space and access even if you stay in a smaller room. Everyone is generally very friendly and warm, again, a total dream socially! The location is pretty much unbeatable, within 3 minutes walking distance you can be at some of the best coffee shops, food, supermarkets and bulk stores, the beach, tour operators, many souvenir shops and clothing stores, etc. So staying here can allow you to have either a very touristic experience or a more locally-rhythmed one, it's up to you. It is also very central and so, very safe. The beach is literally across the street. One last thing to mention is the ease of check-in and check-out. Shuttle buses to the airports can be arranged to directly drop you to the hotel, so as long as you plan ahead with the staff you will be taken care of. I can't wait to come back, and when I stay in Tamarindo, this is where I'll stay.

We read mixed reviews, but we had a pleasant time here and no complaints. Check-in was easy, not much English, but we got there. We parked by the room, which was great. We arrived late afternoon for 1 night, we swam in the pool, kids loved the slide, there was a lovely atmosphere. We slept really well, no noise, and had a lovely breakfast. If you expect a plush hotel, you'll be disappointed. If you are happy with basic with great service, you'll be happy. It's very central too.
Wyndham Tamarindo

This trip was for my honey moon, the staff was pleasant and helpful. The shuttle service was easy and efficient and the trip to town was less then 5 mins away. The beach club that was attached to the hotel is 6 mins away and prime location in the beach. All the rooms have a beautiful view and would definitely book again even if it is not right in the beach as everything is within walking distance and a taxi ride away (we paid 5$ from center of town to our hotel) the rooms were clean and the ac unit kept the room nice and cool which is refreshing coming in from the humid outdoors. Definitely book again … pura vida
Hilton Garden Inn Guanacaste Airport
4.3/5103 Reviews
This is your typical Hilton hotel you would find in America, honestly if you just came here you would think you are back home. Also, they have amenities such a restaurant, pool and fitness room at this hotel. Restaurant food is okay, nothing like the food you have probably have enjoyed while traveling around Costa Rica. Lastly, the room was clean and standard, no fuss! It is also very close to all the rental car return places. Breakfast is not included with reservation, it is something you pay out of pocket. Overall, very great option for someone traveling in or out of Liberia Intl Airport.
Bahia del Sol Beach Front Boutique Hotel

Overall, this place gives you the stereotypical beach tourist vibes. If you're into that, it's a good bang for buck. However, if you're looking for a slightly more authentic Costa Rican experience, this is not the place. I mean even The restaurant is ”Italian.” Why you would have a fake Italian restaurant at a Costa Rican beach resort is beyond me. The Cons (which outweigh the pros): The cleanliness of the property was not as expected nor like the pictures. The exterior floors were dirty, especially around the pool (which was also not clean). The jacuzzi was cold. The roof tiles were broken, dirty, and had trash all over them (or room was on the 2nd floor & had a front row view to the roof). The restaurant was swarming with flies during lunch and dinner times (the fans could have helped but they were only decorational). There was nothing special about the room we had (302), expect for the nice vaulted ceilings. It has 2 rooms, 2 bathrooms which was nice. One room had 2 twin beds and great lighting, there other room has a long bed (poor lighting). A small note, if you like firm mattresses, this is the place for you! The beds were hard and not easy for us to sleep in with our preference of medium firm beds. The Pros: The location was great and the rooms themselves were clean, so it does have that going for it. The front desk was also nice and staff were friendly.
Margaritaville Beach Resort Playa Flamingo

6 Night family vacation at Margaritaville Beach Resort was wonderful. We had an amazing view from our ocean front room. The beach was very nice and we enjoyed walking to the nearby new marina. Transportation to and from airport was taken care of by Minor Gonzales. I recommend booking tours with Minor @ Major Tours as well. I booked transportation and tours before the trip . We got to see and do so much! Traveling with our 20 year old son and 14 year old daughter everyone was happy on the tours especially the mega tour with zip line, tubing, horseback riding, mud bath and hot springs. The ATV tour was a favorite of our son and we even saw monkeys on the tour. Minor did a great job and we loved the individual service he provided- would definitely book with him again. The cons for the resort would be limited food option and not much night time entertainment. We loved the smaller resort size for sure. Our son is a pickle ball/tennis player and we hate that we were not informed ahead of time that the tennis courts were being resurfaced and we not open. Thank would have been nice to know. Pro- the staff was very quick to respond to any thing that we needed when we requested items. One evening we needed towels and an extra blanket after calling the front desk we had the items in hand with in 15 minutes. Overall it was a great trip for our family with many memories made.
Hotel Hacienda la Pacifica

We highly recommend this hotel. We only stayed one night after arriving at Liberia airport as we left for Monteverde the next day. The staff are very firendly and check in was easy. They have a restaurant on site and the food was very good. We had breakfast incliuded in our stay and it was a very generous cooked breakfast with juice and coffee. It is situated in a wooded area and we saw Howler monkeys, deer, birds and Agouti (smaller rodents that are in the Guinea pig family). There is a pool. It looked nice although we did not have time to use it.

Papagayo Golden Palms Beachfront Hotel
4.2/5101 Reviews
The Golden Palms resort in Papagoya is heavily. The staff are outstanding and kind. The pool is so clean and big. It’s so big it never feels crowded. The rooms were clean and had a mini fridge, which was great. We appreciated the complimentary breakfast but it would be nice if the menu varied from day to day. I highly recommend The Golden Palms resort. We’ve been there twice and will return again.
Selina Nosara

This was the worst Selina location I’ve been to (and I just came from la fortuna, which was lovely). Where do I even begin… 1) check in was awful. The front desk is not friendly at all and it is not a welcoming environment. Nobody looks you in the eye and does not care whether you have a great stay or not. 2) no hot water for DAYS. Multiple people have shared they haven’t had hot water either - when I asked about it, they finally turned on the water heater. Not sure why it was off to begin with. Water is still cold unfortunately. 3) Air conditioning is poor. All the rooms are set at 17 C/62 F but it does not feel cool at all - seems to be bad all over this location. 4) NOISY. Even when you’re paying for deluxe/premium suites, they are located right by the main road so it is LOUD. My room was directly above the pig’s “house” so I also got to hear loud snoring in the middle of the night, on top of loud street noises. 5) contacting them via WhatsApp means your message will be ignored- have to follow up constantly or check at the front desk in person. 6) rooms are dirty. They don’t clean the floors and there’s dust everywhere. Also had a cockroach in the bathroom. 7) FAR from the beach and it’s not a safe walking distance as you have to be on the main road. Lots of dirt/dust/smog the whole walk. 8) slow service at the patio restaurant/bar. Expect to wait forever to order, for your food to arrive, and to pay for the check. 9) no safety measures and good luck getting any first aid. Needed a band aid and was told they don’t have any! 10) constant construction so amenities are not fully available at this location. For the first half of my stay, the “rooftop deck” was unavailable and parts of the main pool are empty/under construction. Don’t come here. The staff is really unfriendly, you won’t get any sleep, and there are FAR better places to stay near the beach that are similarly priced (especially if you are paying for a private room here). I was told the General Manager would reach out to me to personally alleviate a lot of my concerns but nobody has reached out.
