My 82 years old mom and I had a two night reservation at this hotel. Due to been affected by a tornado in Texas the evening before traveling to Iowa, we were not able to leave Texas. Right after the tornado, without any power, limited communication system in my city and low cellphone battery, I reached out to request a courtesy exception to cancel my reservation without any penalty. At the same time, I reached out to my other hotels in Ames and my airlines to request the same. All hotels and my airlines were able to provide this courtesy cancellation with a full refund or credit (including for reservations booked tru 3rd party agency). Surprisingly, after several attempts to connect with their management the night of the tornado and the days after the staff informed they were not honoring the courtesy request, not even rescheduling our stay. It is very fortunate this was their decision in the middle of our local emergency. I will never book this hotel again. Book any other hotels in Iowa.

When we arrived, there was no one at the front desk for quite awhile. Long enough that we shouted out for someone. My room was missing the closet door and had a light bulb out above the sink. The air conditioner quit working in the middle of the night. The next day we went down to breakfast at 7:00 a.m. because we had a conference to attend by 8:00 a.m. The man taking our order told us the cook was detained. I explained that we had a deadline and if we couldn't get breakfast before that time, we would go elsewhere. He assured us the cook would be there soon and gave us a cold stale pastry. We had a cup of coffee and waited. After we couldn't wait any longer for breakfast we left. I reported the light bulb out and the A/C not working to the front desk before leaving. When we arrived back to the room, the A/C appeared to be working, but the light bulb was still out. In the middle of the night the A/C quit working again. Some of the staff were doing their jobs. Others were not. I'm a City Clerk and we have a conference in Ames every July. We will not be back.

Basic room and clean lodging, had a refrigerator and microwave. Room was inexpensive and the location had easy access to a lot of different fast food restaurants. Would stay here again, checkin and checkout was fast and easy even though I was booking last minute.

The good, the surfaces that need to be clean are: bedding and bathroom surfaces very clean, which is most important. Staff also very kind.. I rated it average due to a couple room issues. When we walked into the room the tile in the entry way was missing quite a bit of grout, it just unfortunately set a negative tone. The other issue was the door, I believe the hinges could use an adjustment. The door was very tight at the top but loose on the side towards the bottom.. You could stick a pencil through the gap between the door and the frame.. It let in a lot of light at night, we used a towel to cover it for sleeping. it was quiet when we stayed, but had it not been quiet the door gap would have allowed a lot of noise in as well. Would certainly be comfortable staying there again, but would try somewhere else first to see if other hotels in the area have better room maintenance.
